KC Daylighter install question

Two Question In One Post

ok so im in the process of installing these KC Daylighters and i have a few questions i hope you guys could answer.

-wheres a good place to connect the white wire. it is the wire that runs from the supply terminal on the switch. i want to be able to have the daylighters on even when the truck is off and have them turn on and off seperately from the headlights.

-wheres a good place to connect the yellow wire. it is the wire that runs from the 30 terminal on the relay to a "+12 VDC battery". im assuming that i should connect that one to the battery.

-and if i should connect the yellow wire to the battery, it is only two feet long, where should i mount the relay? near the glove box? on the fire wall in the engine bay? i dont think the yellow wire is long enough where i would be able to mount the relay near the steering column if the yellow wire is connected to the battery.

how did you guys take care of these issues when you installed your KC daylighters or other auxillery lights. thanks.

if you guys could point me in the direction of a good write up with photos thatd be awsome.

If you want your light to be controlled simply by a switch and not by the park light, take the white wire, and simply connect it to a 12 volt source (the battery). A good plce to mount the relay would be on the fire wall, what I did is, on my YJ, on the passangers side front fender, there are some holes dilled in at the factory and are unused, I got a 1/4 X 20 stainless nut , bolt, washer and lock washer and mounted the relay there, and ran all the wires through factory looms, It will just make it to the positive terminal, If it doesn't, simply lengthen the line.

I once wired my lights to all be on a compltet seperate switch than the park lights, But the first time I left the aux. lights on during a snow storm by accident and came back to a dead battery, I put them on the park light terminal at the switch. I don't remember the color of the wire, But I can look later and post. Why would you have the aux lights on with out the park lights!

initially i was going to have it so that i could turn my aux lights on regardless of whether the ignition was on or not, but have since decided that would not be a good idea because i would hate to drain my battery accidentally.

i now want it so that i can turn the aux lights on and off seperately from the headlights but the ignition has to be on for them to work. to do so, i would have to run the white (switch) wire from the switch to the fuse box under the hood, correct? what fuse could i use that would allow me to acheive this? and to do so, i would just pop the fuse box off and jam the wires in the space where it runs underneath? im new to this wiring stuff.

get an optima then you won't have to worry about leaving you lights on. I have a set of hella's and left them on one night came out the next morning and they were a little dimmer than usual but the jeep fired right up.

Hi,

Here is a schematic I made a while back that shows how to hook lights up through a relay. Maybe it will help you

I have a optima battery, but I also have 4 hella with 65 watt bulbs. Left on for about 3 hours, just started to crank, but could not make it.

I mounted the 6" KC's on the windshield brackets. I mounted the relay in the relay box on the front right inner fender right in front of the batter. Looks stock! Ran the switch wire along the firewall and through just behind the clutch pedal. I mounted the switch right next to the cigarette lighter. Took me two hours. Hardest part was finding a good grounding point for the lights. I mounted them to body screws under the cowl, but had to scrape a little paint off to get good connection.

You might want to check your state inspection laws regarding auxiliary lighting.

Some states do not allow driving lights to be turned on without the headlights also being on. In New York, for example, one cannot drive with only the parking lights on. If any lights are on, no matter the time of day, the headlights must be on.

If I am not mistaken, aren't newer Jeeps with auxiliary lights wired that way from the factory?

Hi NU4x4,

If it turns out that you are going to wire the KC driving lights such that they will turn on only with the headlights, here is the way I configured the wiring when installing TJ OEM foglights on my CJ. Perhaps my method or an adaptation will be useful for your driving light installation.

My three foglight operating requirements and the "whys":

(1) The foglights turn on only when the headlights are on. (Legal, and a forgetful old guy cannot leave the foglights on after turning off the headlights.)

(2) At my choice, using a three-way dash mounted toggle switch, the foglights stay on when either low or high beams of the headlights are selected. (One usually won't use the headlight high-beams when driving in fog or driving snow because of excessive glare, but the option is there.)

(3) At my choice, using a three-way dash toggle switch, the foglights turn on only when headlight high-beams are on. That is, the foglights are controlled by the foot-operated headlight dimmer switch. (This allows dimming of the headlights and turning off the foglights for oncoming traffic with one action.)

Here is my schematic:

Wire taps 1 and 2 were placed in the foot-operated headlight dimmer switch wiring, a few inches above the switch. Very convenient access: I didn't have to play "Gumby, the Rubber-Boy Contortionist" under the dash.

I hope this information is in some way useful.

drained my battery on tuesday due to the fact that somehow my switch got hit on, and i didn't realize it (lights were covered, so i didn't notice). it was on for a night, jeep didn't start in the morning. i had an 8 am test, so i just found another way to school...therefore leaving the lights on until i got home at 5. the funnier part is the day before, i saw another green grandy parked at school and he left his aux. lights on. i don't really know what the driver looks like, so i couldn't scout him out to tell him. so, good luck with whatever you do :)

That's why I wired my XJ's fog lights through the factory dimmer switch and to the low beam side. This allows the lights to be on with the low beams, and shut off when I switch to high beams.

If I leave my headlamps and foglamps on, I get the buzzer when I open the door, and the headlamp delay keeps the fog lamps and headlamps on for 15 secs. after shuting the Jeep off
