YJ Heater Housing Removal?!?! 9-1-1

After many long rides and numb toes, i decided its finally time to swap my heater core with a new one. After removing the hoses, i am now faced with the challenge of removing the housing. The manual i have says that the nuts are located on the engine-side of the firewall, but it doesnt say where on the firewall. Can anyone whos replaced the core on a YJ w/ AC help me out here so i can take the girl out w/o having to hear her bitchin about how cold she is. the "ITS A JEEP" line isnt working this time
thanks in advance- Rich

I don't remember exactly how many there are but there is around 5 or 6 I think. Look at the firewall and you will see just a nut on the firewall with nothing attached to it. There are a couple above and below the battery and a couple more leading over to the back of the engine.

If it is anything like a CJ being the only heater I have rebuilt. There are 4 nuts not bolts on the engin side of the fire wall. Look inside the engin compartment and just use your minds eye to note where the conections should be. It is much simpler than you will believe. The inside of a heater always preplexed me untill I tore into one. A very simple unit inside. If you loosen but not remove the nuts then there is litlle chance you are going to monkey anything up. Good luck with the numb toes. tug

airbag ever go off while wheeling???

k, i think i found all the nuts, but now here is the other problem. it appears that the AC lines are going to interfere with me taking the housing out. Those sadistic F***'s had to put the screw heads on the firewall side of the housing!

YJ side/nerf bars

The blower motor upgrade will help a lot if you are going to pull it apart I would do that too. There was a post recently to tell you how to do it.

Call up the marching band and lets have a parade, for i have finally got the box out. After doing all this work, i think im going to do the motor upgrade also, only cuz i definitely dont want to do this EVER again. Ill let ya'll know how the finished product comes out.

Thanks a million to all of you who've contributed; couldn't have done it w/o ya

SUCCESS! Got the new core in and THE HIGHLY RECOMENDED BLAZER MOTOR. 12 hours, 3 muscle relaxers for my back and $19 later, The Numb Toes are No More! I wish i had the heat working before i did the upgrade, cuz i would love to be able to see the difference, but i do see that it blows harder and is quieter. :D Now i gotta tackle some other things. . . THANK YOU EVERYONE! You've all saved my feet and possibly my sex life 8)

good for you. sorry i didn't see this yesterday, i had to replace my heater core last fall.
glad to hear it worked out good for you. and i know what you're saying about those a/c lines. F***ERS. could have made it a little eaiser. thought i was going to break those too in the process.
