I have a 1980 cj7 304v8 right now they have converted the stock carb to a manual choke and it is a pain in the butt to start!!! i want to fix this before winter. So i know i want to go with a automatic choke. i do not want to spend a lot of money at all. but still get good decent carb that will last. what you guys think?

I would go with any Edlebrock with electric choke. They are reasonably priced, easily maintained, can be adjusted on the trail with just a screwdriver, and you can get rid of a-lot of vacuum lines if you have them.

When I got 'Black Betty' she was equipped with one of these Edelbrock AFB clones. {Speakin' of turds} and the dang thing just wouldn't run right despite revisiting the metering rods and jets with an Edelbrock kit.
Finally after krapping out at an intersection, the damn thing went up in flames, luckily I had my trusty fire extingusher.
I wound up replacing this turd with the old 'Black Stallion' Carter AFB I had on my Malibu years ago and after going to a smaller jet and lighter springs she's been runnin' like the proverbial top.
I've yet to pull apart this gooked up Edelbrock clone, to find what was the matter, but it's further shaken my faith in new school Edelbrock products

You didn't say 2 barrel or 4. If its still the stock 2 barrel it should be a motorcraft 2100 or 2300. You can get these rebuilt from any parts store or go to a Pick and Pull for a decent one off an old ford 302 or amc v8 just check the numbers on the side of the float bowl - 1.08 or 2.03 something like that, just keep with the same size. Throw in a rebuild kit yourself.
The motorcraft carbs weren't the greatest thing out there but were simple, reliable and there are lots of them out there.

If you have a 4 barrel manifold do what he said above.

Good Luck.

I would put in a choke cable kit. All you do to start is push the gas pedal, pull the choke knob out and tap it back in a bit. Mine fired up just fine in AK from 1975 to '79 when I drove the Haul road Fairbanks to Deadhorse and back with supplies 3 times in winter with an M715.

That’s the only way you use to be able to get a motor, with a manual choke. I’ve used one on my CJ for years. Having said that, auto chokes are convenient.
