Well my transmission came in today....

I got my transmission in today and spent most of the day installing it. I just got back from the "maiden voyage" and the transmission is good...shifts good synchros seem good but there is one problem...no 5th gear...its like its not even there. Oh well though I hardly used 5th anyway after my lift...it just kind of bugs me that 1bigmf sold me that transmission saying that there was absoultely nothing wrong with it...at all...oh well.[addsig]

Is it a five speed? Or should I say it is suppost to be a five speed? Man that is a bummer in a big way! Hope it all works out for the good of all! Tug

Man, I'd be highly pissed off, somebody advertising a transmission as good and come to find out it's broken

There are metal chunks floating around in your transmission if the case has not been apart to fish them out. The c-clip that holds 5th on the main shaft is broken, and they aren't small parts when the clip breaks. Just changing the fluid won't cut it.

You got ripped off, can't believe you're so calm. Can I sell you some parts

Yeah I was pretty pissed off but there isn't much I can do about it. It could have gotten broken while it was being shipped...somehow it fell out of the box twice! I had to go pick it up from the UPS terminal and they had 2 torn boxes plus the one that it was in. The transmission was damaged, but it was no big deal...just the tower had been hit on something and was out of round....I replaced it with mine. I have researched this problem and that is indeed what has happened. Forunantly I have my old transmission still that I can scavange parts from. I'm sitting here looking at the clip you mentioned (from my old transmission) and I agree it is not small. I am mainly upset that I worked all day so hard to put that thing in....and now I have to take it all out again, split the case, find pieces of old clip, put in new clip, clean gasket surfaces, put new gasket, get transmssion back together, put back in jeep.........uuuugh I got my work cut out for me. Sometimes I wonder if its even worth it.[addsig]

1051586

hmm... if UPS screwed it up during shipping, i'd give them a call. if it was shipped INSURED, they should replace it.[addsig]

1051595

Replacing the clip is just a bandaid fix, you need to replace the synchonizers or the clip will quickly break again.

There IS something you can do, insist on a FULL REFUND, you're left with a junk transmission that is only good for scrap, unless you replace the synchros. If you want to be diplomatic, eat the shipping costs and insist on a refund of just the purchase price.

I'm going through this with my transmission right now, swapping it out today just as soon as I get off this PC. I've replaced the clip several times, and it always breaks. The clip is not the cause of the problem, its bad synchros due to running GL5 gear oil.

Good luck, I feel for ya getting screwed like that

Well there will be no bandaid fix for me...I just got the case split a little while ago...its F$*#ED!!! 5th gear fell off the end of the output shaft when I took the case apart. The c-clip that used to hold it on was nowhere to be found...just lots of little shavings to prove that it once existed. The shaft will never hold another 5th gear on it...the splines on the "hold" side of the clip are almost all gone...ground all the way down to the shaft...just nubs are left. It looks like the guy ran it for some time after the gear went. The damage to the splines prove that. Anyway I am totally broke now. All I can do is scrounge up a few bucks to get some gasket so I can put the damn thing back together. I'm just gonna leave 5th gear out of it...at least I will have a 4 speed transmission that works. You were right Bounty Hunter, I got ripped off.

i just have all these extra parts....i have an extra transfercase too....

sold the 2.5 fuel injected to a friend for 300$$.....need to get rid of the rest.....its better than letting them sit there in my garage

Gee I wonder why he would want to sell me a broke transmission...

Well I can see why he never used 5th...

I don't believe for a minute that he never put that transmission in 5th gear. He's so full of it, his eyes are brown

I think its gonna be ok. I removed the 5th gear and put the transmission all back together and everything. The truth is the 1-4 synchros are indeed in good shape. After driving it around for half an hour I can vouch for that. It really is in pretty good shape...the synchros feel good. If it wasnt for the 5th gear thing it would be perfect. My hypothesis in the 5th gear matter is that its not bad synchros, but sheer force that pushes the gear off the shaft. This comes from having improper gearing and big tires. My 5th gear in my old transmission was good...of course I am only running 31s...it may have been the only gear that was good hehe. Well the truth is that I have a very good 4speed transmission now...and that in itself is worth $200 to me. I really don't feel ripped off because I did get a transmission that works...it just took a little work on my part to make it work.[addsig]

Just thinking out loud. I´ve never taken an AX5 apart. But I´ve been in a bunch of farm machinery. You´d be surprised what I´ve done with MIG welder and a hand grinder. Spraying it with water from a window sprayer while welding, will save the temper. Wouldn´t count on taking it apart agian. But the weld will outlast the transmission. Just three good spot welds, don´t have to get fancy. It´s always better to use the right pieces but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.[addsig]

Honestly MudderChuck I had thought about welding the gear on...but something about welding on transmission parts covered in gear oil...I dunno. Splatter would be a problem as well. Plus the fact that that is pretty permanent...the transmission could never be rebuilt. If I could have removed the whole shaft that might have been an option...but because the gears go on in order...then the bearing...then 5th is kind of "added on" to the end of the shaft. I think its because this transmission originally started out as a 4 speed called the AX4 is why there are problems. The case is virtually the same....they just added on the 5th gear assembly to make it the AX5. It was a cheap way to turn a 4 speed transmission into a 5 speed. Unfortunantly it is weak...because nothing is holding the helical 5th gear on the shaft except a small C-clip. Helical gears exert a side to side force on the gear. Both of the 5th gears that I took out have the impression of the c-clip embedded into the metal...its like it was "stamped" into it. It takes a lot of force to stamp a 1/16" impression into hardened gears.[addsig]

I wouldn´t weld the gears, unless you have to, a little play on the shaft and a little tilt are programed in, welding the gear can get noisey (but usually eventually wears in). A thrust washer welded to the shaft(hardend steel)(havn´t had much luck welding C clips) with approximatley the inside diameter of the shaft (doesn´t have to be centered on the shaft as long as it doesn´t contact anything on the outer edge). A couple of feeler gauges to keep a .001 gap between the gears and the thrust washer. If the washer warps a little during welding it can be tapped with a punch and hammer to try and keep a constant .001 gap, a good spot weld in three places works best. Spraying everything with water and a window pump sprayer, will help deal with splatter and temper. Cleaning the oil off with spray brake cleaner works well. The whole works can be removed if necessary with a small air grinder or Dremel. Try a couple of practice welds with the MIG, wouldn´t want to try it with rod welder (buzz box) Heli arch would be ideal.[addsig]

1051773

Damn well I wish I had a MIG...all I got is an old buzz box hehe. I think just using the transmission as a 4 speed for now will work. I'll probably upgrade later in the future to something better but this will work for now....at least my jeep is drivable again.[addsig]

I spent alot of time in places, where parts, were weeks away if ever, got used to doing things myself. Besides I was always kinda jealous of the natives, making parts for there 52 Chevs with a file and scrap metal.

HELLO EVERYONE

JUST BECAUSE I'VE BEEN GONE FOR A FEW DAYS, DOESN'T MEAM I'M HIDING.

THIS ALSO DOESN'T GIVE YOU AN EXCUSE TO TALK SHIT ABOUT ME!

IF SOMEONE WOULD HAVE NOTIFIED ME ABOUT THEIR PROBLEM, I WOULD HAVE DONE ALL I COULD TO RECTIFY IT. IN ALL HONESTY, WHEN I USED THAT TRANSMISSION, I HAD A 2.5 4 CYLINDER AND 35 INCH TIRES. IF YOU THINK I REALLY USED FIFTH GEAR, YOU ARE HORRIBLY WRONG. ANYBODY WHO HAS A STOCK JEEP WITH LARGE TIRES KNOWS THAT FIFTH GEAR IS PRACTICALLY USELESS.

THE TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT AND COST ME 800 BUCKS.

RAYOVAC.........TO YOU I AM SORRY THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAS NO FIFTH, BUT YOU DO HAVE MY E-MAIL ADDRESS, MY PHONE NUMBER, AND YOU IM ME OFTEN. ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS LET ME KNOW.

FOR THE PEOPLE WHO GAVE HIM IDEAS ON HOW TO WORK ON IT....THANK YOU

BUT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO INSULTED ME,,,,,,I DO NOT THINK IT WAS YOUR PLACE TO OPEN YOUR MOUTH. IM GLAD YOU ARE CONCERNED FOR HIM, BUT LIKE I SAID ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS LET ME KNOW..

MY NAME IS 1BIGMF.........AND I DO NOT LIKE SLANDER.

I AM NOT A CHILD (LIKE 411) AND I DO NOT LIKED TO BE TALKED TO AS A CHILD.

SINCE I GOT ON THIS SITE, ALL I HAVE TRIED TO DO IS HELP. I NOTICED A LITTLE FRICTION FROM SOME PEOPLE WHO RUN SMALL TIRES, I LET THAT PASS, AS I HOPE WE CAN GET PASSED THIS. [addsig]

1051868

Now that I see all sides... I feel like I am able to open my mouth now. I don't have anything to say... its not my business really and I have no suggestions... Just felt I should post something that means nothing to anyone... I like Gatorade by the way.... Fruit Punch none-the-less[addsig]

1051886

Its alright 1bigmf...I tried to IM you but got no reply. I really didn't mean for this to turn out this way. I figured oh well, I paid you and its pretty much final. I was a bit upset about the transmission having no fifth but I figured that I would just deal with it instead of hassling you. I really don't even have the money to ship the transmission back to you anyway....plus its already in my jeep and it works except for 5th gear and I'm satisfied with that. I'm only running 31's and 5th gear was useable for me but it was marginal at best....I really don't miss it that much. The other gears run very good...no grinding or binding..the transmission shifts very smoothly. I am happy with it. I am sorry you got made out to be the bad guy here.[addsig]

What does tire size have to do with anything

AND WHY ARE YOU YELLING

I think you've put it in 5th before, just to see if it'd pull the load. I don't hear an offer for a refund?
