I am in the process of getting everything together for my 87 yj 350 conversion the engine is back with a fresh rebuild I am now looking for transmission and transfer case can anyone tell me which one would be recommended I would like to use a 700R4 transmission, but if it comes down to it I could deal with a TH350 or TH400 which Tcase would go best with that set up???

Depends on what tire size you have, what gear range you want and how much you abuse it. I would say for abuse, the TH400 to Np205 would be the best answer. For gearing and power the Th350 to Dana 300 is the best choice. The Th350 scavenges 15% less power from the engine than the 400. The Dana 300 has a better gear ratio than the 205. The Th350 to Dana 300 is still very strong, so that may be your best bet. Plus you can clock the transfer case or get a flip kit.

Exactly.
I just chose to mention the 350 and 400 because they are widely available. The 700R4 is an updated version with overdrive. The 4L60E and 4L80E replaced the TH350 and TH400 in size and strength but are electronically controlled with solenoid shifted valve bodies. The 350 may be a better choice because of the manual kick down cable. The 400 downshifts with an electric switch. I left the switch out of my 400 and down shift it manually by just bumping the shifter down a gear. It automatically goes in first whenever you stop. Seems to operate well with my wimpy transfer case gears and 4.56's moving monster tires.

I don't know what front axle you are running so I will assume that it is stock.
If I were in your shoes I would run the Chevy 350 to Th350 to a Dana 300 with a flip kit so you can turn it over and run your front driveshaft on the driver's side. Then later if you put a passenger drop axle in you can change it back. Not the cheapest way to go but strong and reliable.
