Transfer Case Shifting

Hi, I have a problem with the NP 231 Transfer case in my '88 Cherokee. It shifts and runs in 4H. When the Shifter is fully in 2H, the front axle will disengage but there is still partial vacuum present at both the "PART TIME" light switch and at the front axle vacuum motor. Occasionally I'll feel the front axle try to engage while in 2H. The "PART TIME" light is constantly on (except when accelerating). I've replaced the Vacuum switch and I've adjusted the shift linkage four times now without solving the problem.

Any Ideas

I´d pull a vacumn test on the shift motor (should hold thirty inches of vacumn)( or really blue cheeks using the suck test). Sounds like your passing vacumn from the engauge circuit, to the disengauge circuit, maybe at the shift motor. Mine failed to completly disengauge on occasion, a few shifts in and out usually loosened things up a bit. Mine failed to disengauge completely once, when a hose feel off of something in the vacumn circuit. A vacumn test at the manifold might be helpful, mine usually showed about 12 inches of vacumn at idle. I think the book said 9 inches is minimum. Then a test at various points in the vacumn circuit Might be helpful in narrowing down a vacumn leak. I´ve found many worn and chaffed vacumn lines, in mine, over the years.[addsig]

You were correct. The Vacuum motor leaks between the 2 and 4 wheel drive ports. went to the parts dept. to find out that motor's not cheap

. So I disconnected both 4 wheel drive hoses and capped the corresponding ports on the vacuum motor. May have to live with only 2 wheel drive for now

. When the front end is on a jack, should turning the front wheels make the front drive shaft turn when in 2 wheel drive? Thanks for the help.[addsig]
