T/c case linkage

Hi everyone.

I have an 88 yj with a 4.2. Just did an upgrade to a rebuilt ax15 and np231. After installing the transmission shifts fine but the t/c is stuck in 2 wheel hi. I cannot get it to move. I have looked at pics on the web and all show the linkage straight up at the t/c for two wheel. Is this correct? What can I try to get this thing to shift?

Does it shift when you reach under and take off the linkage and shift the arm by hand? When I swapped tcases in a zj, I had the wife hold the shifter in 2wd and I put the tcase in 2wd and then hooked the linkage up

No it won't move at all. i unhooked the linkage and put a wrench on it try and shift it. I have also tried to rock it in 1st and reverse and it still won't move. I purchased the set up fro Manstrans but have not been able to get in touch with the right person.

I converted the front axle to full time and got rid of the vacume set up. Would that module directly above the shift linkage have anything to do with it?

No the vacuum switch has nothing to do with it. With the linkage disconnected, you should be able to move the flat bar to shift the transfer case, or at least with using a 9/16" wrench on the shift pawl. Sounds like that 231 needs a rebuild. They're very easy to rebuild, and used ones can be found for around $100.

Thanks for the replies. What sucks is that I just bought the whole setup as a rebuild. i will try and get a hold of them on Monday and find out if they will honor their warranty. Especially since it hasn't been on the road yet. If they won't I will definitely be posting not to buy from them.

Found my problem. It was the vacum module. Took it out and it shifts fine. I have it up on jack stand so I adjusted the linkage and it works great. Since I converted my front end to a TJ axle and got rid of the vacum crap I replaced the module with a 3/8 pipe plug.
