Steering Column Removal

Hello,
I am new to this forum but after a little googling I stumbled upon your sites quote that "removing the steering column is quite easy" and i have been at it for days with no luck, I need to replace mine, take the whole thing out and put a new one in. I have an '88 Grand Wagoneer. I have no idea what I'm doing, If you have any advice, that would be great.
thanks,
michael

There should be 2 bolts on the upper part of the column and 2 bolts on the firewall. There's also 2 bolts holding a brace support on that lower mount. Disconnect the ignition connectors from the switch(located on the upper lower section of the column), directional connectors(flat connector) located on the lower bottom of the column. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the engine compartment and remove the column bolts previously stated and Walla! a waggy with no steering.

please excuse my tenderfooted status as a jeep owner, but i have no idea what you just said, the only bolts ive found so far are two on the left and right side of the steering wheel column down around by the air vents. Ive stripped the steering wheel down to the white turn signal piece. I cant pull anything out yet however... would photos be helpful? thanks in advance

Yup! pics. always helps point out your questions. And for asking questions, we don't bite peoples head off unless you fail to puntuate and use ebonics.:D. Feel free to ask any questions you have.

Okay, here are some pictures of the column in its current state. The four screws I've taken out are visible but somewhat hard to see so I included separate pictures for them. I appreciate the help and quick responses steelheadz. The picture where there is one empty screw slot visible is the screw I am talking about, if you look to the left there is a darker spot that has an empty screw hole as well. I took out both of those screws already.

Follow that column tube towards the floor board. There should be more bolts holding the lower column to the firwall. That upper column pics you have, there should be a U shaped bracket on the column with bolts to the column and to the instrument panel assembly. Remove the bolts to the instrument panel, not the one on the column.

Its a bracket shaped like a U and has 2 tabs that has bolts holding the upper base of the column to the instrument panel. it's closest to the upper column.

I have been looking for the ignition lock That you were taking off j8134499 I be leave is the number. Let me know if want to sale
