speedo tach problems

I have 2000 tj with the 4.0. The speedometer and tachometer are acting crazy. They both just seem to work when they want to. They will cut on and off while driving. Sometimes if I push the trip button they will come on, but it doesn't stop it completely. Any ideas?

Do the rest of the instruments work OK? How about the "idiot" lights? Does the odometer work (and increase as you drive)? If everything else works OK I'd say you have a problem with the cluster itself. If everything is going nuts you might want to check the connector which connects the cluster to the harness. I'm pretty sure the tach and speedo signals are sent from the ECM to the cluster via the data bus (so there are no "speedo wires" or "tach wires" running up there. Best of luck - John

the odometer works whenever the speedometer works. As far as I know the other instruments work, or at least they work when the speedo and tach work. Where is the plug for the instiment cluster so I can make sure it is plugged properly.

Take the trim around the cluster and you will see, i think its 5 screws, that hold the cluster on and it just pulls off, it just sets on the connectors, had the same problem a while back

First , remove the top panel then the Knee blocker panel. remove the screws securing the instrument cluster bezel then remove the bezel. remove the 4 screws that holds the instrument cluster gauges then remove the Gauge cluster. Inspect the terminals for corrosion and pulled out connector pins.
