shackle problems

Ok so i put on my front shackles, no problem. then go to the back, loosin the bolts and jack it up. try to get the bolts out, the bottom ones come out easy. but the top ones are another story. theres a half an inch between the bolt head and the gas tank, thus not enough room to get the bolt out. so we tried many things to get those top bolts out, so in conclusion the only way to get the bolts out are to drop the gas tank, right?? or am i missing something??lol. thanx

I cut the bolts with a sawzall. I dont know how you get them out without cutting them or dropping the tank. Why dont you fill us in BostonJeep?????

Don't drop the tank, it's a pain in the ARSE. Just cut the bolts like laneiac said. It's easier to buy 2 new grade 8 bolts and put them in the opposite way than drop the tank.

Me and my dad tried to cut the bolts but those are some HARD bolts. we ruined like 3 brand new blades tryin and didnt even get half way through. I guess we'll try again tomorrow. thanx for the input.

Get better blades. My DeWalt reciprocating saw ate through them pretty well with good blades, but each bolt took a blade. Don't put too much pressure on it, let the saw do the work.

Hold a wrench on the other end to keep it from spinning.

Took your advice, Im gettin better blades tomorrow, and i AM getting those bolts off if it kills me. and tomorrow im gettin my tires mounted on the new wheels and should have it up and rollin by tomorrow night. thanx for the help.

oh BBJ, we cut one with a recip saw, halfway.. the blade was dead after that... then we used some wrenches to shear the rest of the bolt... then pulled it out...

the other side, we used a cutting wheel... i hate recip saw blades now... a cutting wheel is the only way to cut metal.. other than a plasma cutter of course.. or a water jet... but a wheel is the only cost effective way

don't forget to use oil, your best friend when cutting with a sawzall. Have somebody blast it with like WD40 every so often while yer cutting.

I'm finally done with the shackles. got the rear in in like half an hour. bout 5 minutes a piece to sawzall the bolts out and then the install wasnt that bad. now all i have to do is wait for my tires to arrive at the store.

i was able to get those bolt out by using a pry bar and a block! took a while tho>>

it CAN be a pain to get them out... that rubber likes to make its way forming around every nook and cranny it can

I second cutting with an angle grinder and cutting wheel, much easier.

Install the new bolts from the outside in, so the nuts are closest to the fuel tank.

I couldnt get an angle grinder up in there to make the cut... Wish I could have, would have been much easier than the sawzall.
