resetting tire bead w/ hairspray

anyone here ever tried the hairspray and fire trick to reset the bead of a tire. Just curious bc i'm about to try it with atrailer tire.

I've seen it done before. I don't think it takes much.

well i tried it and it didn't work, but it was funny. so i just caked on some green slime around the tire rim and fill it with air. It caught and filled right up and then i wiped away the excess slime on the side of the tire. sweet deal

"Hey Y'all, hold my beer"...

sorry, had to say it.. just be careful if you try something like this, it is real easy to get hurt. I'd recommend even a portable air compressor and anything to wet the beed - even water. this is much safer.

Graewolf has it right. This method is dangerous and could leave you on the side of the trail in need of medical help and a still broken down jeep.

The best method is to take a ratchet strap and strap the center of the tire and use your compressor. Or just wait till you get off the trail...
Because if you go wheeling without a spare tire...you deserve to be stuck.

Never heard of gasoline, wouldn't try it. You have to follow up the ether with air quick, as it quickly cools and contracts almost as quickly as it expanded. Here's a pic using ether (starting fluid). Nevermind the photochop of the PC, there's really a tire behind it ;)

That's actually the most common way to do it. Plus, when you're out wheeling, everyone has gasoline. Anything that's fairly flamable will work though.

You put tire on the wheel as tight as possible, put gas in the tire, light it, and the flame will burn up all the oxygen...thus sucking the tire onto the wheel. It definatly takes some pracitice, but once you figure it out it's quite easy and safe.

BZZZZZZ!!! Wrong. If it were sucking it would create a vacuum and compress the tire. It is the rapid expansion of hot gases, explosion if you will, that inflates the tire quickly and forces it up on the bead.
Good thread though. I expect to hear from a lot of burned up people on Monday.

No but ive used chem tool starting fluid it works really nice

I would argue that gasoline is not the most common way to do this, it's ether (starting fluid). I would also argue that it's not 'quite safe' as you put it, there's a very large amount of inherent danger in using either. Not saying I wouldn't do it or haven't done it, but you can't go into it thinking it's safe

testosterone + any amount of gasoline + an ignition source = Strong need for an emergency plan.

That comes straight from my wife.

i got '9-1-1' dialed just gotta hit call, lol jk

i used to bust tires mon through sat 7:00 to 6:00 for a living. it is easier and safer to use a ratchet strap with some soap than it is to lite the darn thing on fire. just like Bounty, i have done the fire thing too and it is a lot more fum, but it seems like the more fun things are, the more dangerous they are. just ask my missing eyebrow. (ok, that was a joke, i still have both my eyebrows)
