Possible engine swap

I don't know if I will do it, just looking for information. What would be the easiest engine and transmission swap? What would the prices be approximately at retail? And what about prices from the junkyard? What cars can I pull the engines and transmissions from? And how many hours of work would I be looking at? I have the resources and I have pretty much all the tools I would need at my disposal, as well as my grandfather who has a lot of experience working on cars. Just kind of looking for information. Thanks.

What ya swapin it into. Small block chevy is usually easiest. Most aftermarket support and adapters. Etc

There's nothing that is really a bolt-in or even close. Your stock transmission won't handle any more power than what the 2.5L has so plan on swapping an entire drivetrain, will save money and trouble over sourcing adapters.

Check with Jeepers in your State and see what can legally be swapped in. There are Emissions laws that may prevent you from swapping in any drivetrain older than '97 or any drivetrain that wasn't originally available in a TJ.

What would be a good engine and drivetrain to swap? I'm kind of just figuring what I want to do with my jeep. I have stock axles, so would I need to upgrade those as well?

i swaped in a sbc lol pretty easy swap lots of aftermarket support and i retained my axles and transfer case did the swap in 2 weekends but did not work on it constantly puled the old 4cyl and trans out on a sater day took all motor mounts and what not off then we went ta work measureing for placement of new motor and trans but in the end i did end up beefing up my axles they r still the amc 20 rear and dana 30 tho

The 30/35 axles in your TJ won't hold much especially if you plan on bigger tires. The 35 is only good up to about a 31" tire with stock power.

Marc, I'm running 31's right now, and wanted to move to 33's with a 4 inch suspension lift soon. If I regeared, would that still be too much for my stock axles to handle?

Dan, so does that mean you are still running stock axles?

they r the stock houseings lol every thing else has been replaced in them tho chromo shafts one piece shafts in the rear i have gussets being made rt now ta help stregthin the tubes and the tubes r welded in i have lock right lockers front and rear and running 38 super swampers 4.88 gears

You can regear to 4.88 and move 33" tires pretty well with the stock drivetrain.

I think something may have gotten lost in translation in my mind. If i regear, I would be regearing the transmission correct? Or would I be regearing the axles?

Regearing gets your axles back closer to stock after swapping to larger tires. Bigger tires means more rolling resistance. If you go to 33s with stock gearing 5th gear will be useless and hitting 55mph will be a struggle. BTW Dan has a CJ which has stronger axles than your TJ since his came factory with a V8 option.

that and i allso have alot of money tied up in my axles to marc lol if your going to build your yj u have ta figure alot of things into mind and then u allso have ta figure how much money u want to spend and then figure things out from there i started out with a pretty decent rig to begin with but after i have built my axles and everything up the way i wanted i love my cj but yet i want better then what i have. its a very exspensive project i have into my jeep about 13000 allready and to get it to where i want it to ill have ta spend another 6 ta 7 thousand yet and anyone that has built a jeep can addmit that these projects are not cheap
