LOL it doesnt hold at ALL. I think that my rear brakes are worn a bit but shouldnt it still hold a little? Im just affraid that one of these days the transmission will pop outta gear and ill find my jeep down the block. How do I go about fixing this?

Thanks,

There was a recall on the YJ in 2002 for the parking brake assembly. The dealer will replace the entire assembly for free if you haven't already had it done. There was also a recall on the front rotors in '98. They should take care of that as well. I had my recalls performed on my '90, however the parking brake still doesn't hold very good...needs adjusting.

It generally means your rear shoes need adjusted, easy to do. It will also make a huge difference in general braking because the way it stands now the front brakes are doing most of the work.

I do this as regular maintenance on every jeep I get in the garage, and the owners can't believe how well the jeep stops when they get it back. They would have thought I put discs on the rear.

The YJ ebrake recall is only to prevent the ebrake from disengaging accidentally. It's merely a bracket that remounts the ebrake pedal assembly to the tub. The dealership will likely adjust the ebrake at the same time.

all you have to do is have the correct tool, which im sure you can find one at any auto parts store. there are rubber stoppers on the lower inside of the rear brakes. pull the stoppers out and rotate the sprocket inside until you start to feel sligt tention on the rear tire as if te brakes are being applied very softly. also i was told it could be adjusted by holdin your rakes while backing through a parking lot or something.

Could be that your rear brakes themselves need to be adjusted...or it may simply be that your parking brake needs to be adjusted.

That's the way it's 'supposed' to work, but seldom does. That is why so many peoples rear brakes are out of adjustment.

how far back did the recall go on the YJ? my 87 brake pops off at the damndist times. (like when i forgot to put it in gear)
