Nutter question

I just tried the nutter bypass on my 87 4.2. I am running a Weber 32/36 and an rv cam as the only mods to the engine. When I swapped the wires, I also moved the vacuum advance to the ported outlet on the carb as per instructions. When I went to set timing, it would only advance to 6*BTDC. And yes, this was checked with the vacuum unhooked and plugged. On a test drive, the power was lower and it dieseled badly on shutdown. Once the motor cools off, I'm putting it back to normal for now. I traced the wires out from end to end and they are correct----distributor purple to module purple and distributor orange to module orange(which changes to green w/black stripe). Before doing this, I had much more adjustment available in the timing. Any ideas if I did anything wrong?
