New Jeep owner

I just bought a 76 CJ7 and the transmission only seems to engage when in 4H and 4L. Is this typical of this year? As stated I'm a new jeep owner and excited for this Jeep project.

More info would be helpful. Is it a manual trans or an auto? The "76 came from the factory with a Dana20 xfer case. Are you sure you're in the correct position when trying to engage 2H. Could be a xfer case issue.

Transfer case linkage might need adjusting if it's not completely engaging 2hi.

Possibly a silly question, but did the previous owner pull the rear driveshaft?

I had the rear in my old f150 explode and had to drive it home in 4wd.
