You have been busy, it's looking good. I'm getting my bike ready for spring then be tearing into mine to put in both rear quarters and a full cage. Hurry up and get yours done, you seem qualified to help with mine.lol

Lol yea I'm trying to get'R done before this
Spring. This yr renegade didn't come with a
Tail gate unless it was silver anniversary
But I've got one in the works. Made out of
1/4" diamond plate.

As far as I can tell it is. So far all looks original. This is my first jeep restore, it trips me out how basic they are. It's a lot of fun. Does anyone know much about these AMC 304cu.? Are they purdy powerful?

a buddy had one years ago and it seemed strong enough. he had 33s and we went through everything and hauled butt on the highway

The 304 is a tough engine, they feel strong in a Jeep. I really think you wouldn't need any more. The earlyer years had more HP and it gradually dropped over the years due to AMC lowering the compression (I guess for the EPA). From what I've read, the oil press and lube system is kind of a weak point but their fine as long as your not turnning alot of RPM's. You don't have to anyway, they idle at about 700 and pull well down low. If I were going to build it up much I'd work on oil press and flow. Timing chains are bad to wear due to lack of lube in that area. I put a Cloyes true dual roller in mine, true rollers can get by with less lube. If left mostly stock and driven right they don't get bad MPG's for something with the aerodynamics of a brick. Headers seem to help 'em quite a bit. The stock Motocraft carb is a good unit. One thing I like about them is they are very interchangable with the 290,343,360,390 and 401's. I'm not real clear on it but I think they're all pretty close other than bore and stroke changes.

Just a couple things.

1. Looks great, I am very envious.

2. yes, that appears to be the original steering wheel, but the horn button does not appear to be original CJ5, looks like a FSJ button, but this is based on a pic that is hard to see.

3. Skip the body lift. run some 2.5" lift springs if you really want to lift it. some old school steel wheels and some 34" ltb's or Special service swampers would look hot.

4. the 304 is a solid motor, as mentioned, the power ratings in the later years (79-85) were pretty misserable due to emmisions crap and poorly flowing heads and exhaust manifolds. The 304 will really wake up with a set of older stock FSJ 360/401 manifolds or headers, re-worked heads, aluminum intake and a solid running carb in the 500-650 cfm range.

5. if your looking for an original tail gate, I think I have one in my shed, or a re-pop version from crown actually fits really good and would finish out the look of the tub as opposed to a diamond plate one, but if thats what you like, run it.

6. Keep it up!

Where are you and the tail gate located? I would rather run a jeep tailgate but didn't know where to find one and didn't know how pricey they are. Thanks for the insight.

Yes, I had a 73 CJ5 with a 304, came with a two barrel carb. I put an Edelbrock manifold and at the time the carter carb. Man that livened that baby up a lot. felt like 50 more horse. It was a nice and easy to put on. A twelve pack of beer and it was ready.

I wish my 304 was as powerful as your stock 73' 304. What I read and hear after 1975 the horse power really started declining. But once I get it up and going I plan on waking it up a bit.
