looking to lift...

So this summer i'm planning to hopefully lift my yj about 4.5 inches and set it up on some more impressive 33's... i've been looking at RE's lift and mickey thompson baja claws and i just wanted to see what ya'll thought about this... will 4.5 be enough to clear 33's easily or am i gonna have to throw in a body lift too... i'm also curious about how low i should gear down to accomodate my new tires behind my 2.5... i'm not looking to go fast and i want plenty of power in the mud and on take offs but i do want to be able to hold highway speeds fairly easily(50-55)... i'm new to lifting so i'm tryin to get the details before i start buying anything... thanks for the help

4.5" is enough for 33" on a YJ. You may get a little rubbing in the rear if you were to run a hardtop or have rear passengers. A 1" BL or TJ fender flares would alleviate this.

4.88 is as low as you can go with gearing in the stock axles. It'll do okay for the 2.5L and 33" tires, should get you where you wanna be.

As for tires, Claws don't do too well in the mud from what I've seen. Consider a TSL like the TSL Radial, good compromise.

I run the re 4.5 and can say they are the best springs i've had (#3) or even seen. That said you should fit 33's w/o problem and just get a radial tire(vote for swampers). You won't like bias on the street. 4.88's are all you can do for your axles and the 4 banger.

Dave do you need a SYE with that set up. I'm looking at the same kit for my 95 2.5 YJ.

I would recommend it. They are getting so cheap now that i think everyone should get one.

Yeah w/e tires i get i'm going radial... it's still my dd after all... are you sayin 4.88 is as low as i can go and i should stay around 4.56 or 4.88 is what i need to be running to get any decent power out of my engine? how much is an SYE gonna run me and are there different brands(anything i should stay away from?)... i fully trust ya'lls judgement in these areas and i'm thankful for the help

4.88 is the lowest made for the stock axles, and it's where you want to be with the 2.5L and 33" tires.

Click Here for a good SYE for $185 and free shipping. I've installed at least half a dozen of that brand and they are quality. Lifetime warranty as well.

Then shorten a TJ or XJ front driveshaft for use in the rear and you'll be all set. Don't forget to set your pinion angle correctly, will likely require cutting and rewelding the spring perches on the rear axle to get the pinion 1º down from parallel with the driveshaft, or 1º down from pointing directly at the transfer case rear output.
