Jeep Gov..?

I want to fold the top down and remove the doors. :p

I guess you're right Mingez. What would be the most practical for me isn't even a Jeep to be honest. Practicality be damned.

lol you could always just cut the top off the cherokee and make the doors removable. I was going to do that to my flipped one, but parents made me sell it so I wouldn't put money in it, since I'm in college. There's a couple cherokees like that though. That would fix alot of problems. It would almost be a Cherokee/Wrangler/truck/car mix.

Next time you need to go pickup a computer desk at Best Buy, take your wranger and tell me if it's practicle. Take your YJ camping, and tell me if you can take more gear than I without the help of a trailer or ten types of racks and doo dads.

I've hauled 4x8 sheets of plywood, 10 foot 2x4's, a computer desk for my mom (yuppers, that's right), 3 60x36 double-pane double-hung windows, 500 lbs of paving stones, and much more in my YJ and I don't have any racks or "doo dads" at all. Lay the plywood across the roll bar and windshield frame, strap it down and go. Shove the 2x4's, desk, windows, etc. in the back and between the seats and let them stick out the back with a red flag on them. How much freakin' camping gear do you need, you sissy city boy?!? I can get all my gear in the back of the YJ and have room to spare for pieces of driftwood I come across, or rocks that Sunshine just has to have for her rock garden. I take two sleeping bags, a tent, a cooler, a lantern, a bow saw (or occasionally a chain saw) and a shovel. What more do I need? I'm guessing you have to take your air mattress, cook stove, portable toilet, portable sink (so you can wash your pretty face), portable shower, and your teddy bear to keep you secure at night, right? Bit of a dandy, aren't you? j/k

I guess I should tell you that I don't have the back seat in the YJ. It's only been in twice since I bought it, once for 2 days when I took my daughter-in-law and her friend down to OKC to the airport, and one other time for a week when we had all our nieces and nephews stay with us.

Tell me in what ways a SWB Jeep is more "practical" for you all.

A lot of what I wrote above is part of it. It's shorter (in length) so it gets around in traffic better. It gets better mileage. It's convertible so I can get lots of sun, wind, and clear blue skies on my daily commute. I've very seldom ever had to transport more than 3 other people in any of the vehicles I own, so with the back seat installed, I can transport as many people as I care to or have had to. I get a lot more conversations started by other people because it's a YJ instead of an XJ. I get lots more waves from pretty young girls because it's a YJ (though that doesn't matter because I've forgotten what to do with pretty young girls in my old age). It's convenient to get in and out of (without the doors, more so than an XJ). I feel like I'm driving an off-road vehicle rather than a 4wd car. It's shorter (in length) so it fits better in my garage and I can turn it around inside the garage if I want to. Most of all, it fits my personality. Yeah, I can also get groceries in mine, too, and it's a heckuva lot more fun to do than in a 4wd car. 8)

.no way would I ever own an XJ. Big, cumbersome, heavy, long grocery-getters. If I wanted a vehicle to haul stuff in, I'd get a pickup...oh, I have one of those. If I wanted a vehicle to haul passengers in, I'd get a car...oh, I have one of those, too. If I wanted a vehicle to tackle the obstacles off-road, then I'd get a Wrangler...oh, I have one of those, too!!! SWB is the ONLY way to wheel!!

Well, as much as I love a SWB Jeep I need to interject here. Big, cumbersome, heavy, and long are all totally wrong when describing the XJ.

My 2000 XJ specs (2000 TJ sport specs in paranthesis)[6 cyl YJ Specs]
101.4" wheelbase (93.4") [93.5]

3386lbs (3216) [3080]

So, it is 8" longer and 170lbs heavier than a TJ. 7.9" longer and 306 lbs heavier than a YJ. It's not much bigger and certainly not much heavier. I have no problems squeezing the XJ down a narrow trail either.

The little bit more wheelbase on an XJ is actually an advantage offroad in most cases. Once a YJ ot TJ gets to a certain lift height they have to have the wheelbase lengthened anyhow for driveline angles and overall stability.

 As for the grocery getter comment... I'm going to forget that one, although being a family man I can say that groceries have been in both my YJ and my XJ so there!

Don't get me wrong I want another SWB Jeep but you'd have a hell of a time convincing me a SWB Jeep would be a better choice than an XJ to build for a trail.

Okay... now ya done it...

put 'em up!

Seriously Sparky... you gotta admit a modded XJ is one of the coolest looking rides out there... and I'm sure Mingez will back me up on the fact that chicks dig 'em ;)

Car... sheesh! damn that's cruel.

lol yea an XJ is def not a car. That's a pretty low blow. How are you getting better gas mileage? I had a 88 YJ and it was the same on gas as my XJ, and sometimes worse. Sure girls like wranglers, but you could get the same reaction from driving some type of convertible. But enough fighting over it, I would take any jeep (cept liberty, I'm not too fond of those) over a car. It's just depends on how much stuff you haul to decide whether a XJ or Wrangler is more practical.

Maybe so, but I can still haul more stuff. More=better. Scoreboard...I win!

Well, I'm sure you usually bring along your mouth harp, your wash board (percussion), sunscreen for the back of your neck (to keep it from turning nuclear melt down red) and of course, spare teeth. Unlike the country folk of Kansas, I need to brush my teeth and where shoes of somekind when I'm outdoors. Just because you people all have callouses on your feet from all of the fire walking you do while snake handling don't label me a "sissy."

Well hell yeah, if you were half as good looking as me, you'd have to protect your investment too. And then maybe...just maybe...you could strike those conversations with pretty girls without the need of a SWB Jeep.
It don't matter what hoopty ride you put me in...the honey's will wave if you're this pretty.

It's slightly shorter in legth and slightly taller in height. (YJ is 6" taller)
Better gas mileage? What... like a gallon per week? I know prices are high but dood!

You need friends first Sparky.

BTW-- the above flaming is just some friendly jabbing between good friends. He knows I'm kidding.
Hee hee

Ooh, this is getting good...

I love my XJ.
I would also love a YJ.
I would also love a TJ.
I would also love a CJ.
I would also love an MJ.
I would also love a ZJ.
I would also love an FSJ.

I would love to have them all, or any combination of the varying models listed above. Don't plan to get rid of the XJ ever, unless it becomes damaged beyond any possible repair, IE: totalled. I just want to add Jeep to the collection.

I like Jeeps in any format, each can be good at everything, and excellent at different things.

I do not like guacamole, olives, fish, or anything spicy.
Nor do I like working on GMs.
Or Fords.
I also do not like small and whiny children in the grocery store.
I can't stand when people jack up my good cookware.
Or use my obscenely expensive kitchen knives to cut drywall...

But I do like Jeeps.

Ya know, I was gonna say that, but the truth hurt too much!

God I need a life........

RE: Progress, almost done....

lol that's prett rough. But it's ok you still have your jeep. It's the only friend you need. And maybe a tow strap to pull out those H2's and Fords.

That could be, but I was heading down a big hill and I was still gaining until I hit that point. And when I was doing it on flat ground I would hit that point, slow down a bit, and start speeding back up until I hit that point agian. There wasnt much slowing down, but still.

Re: Attention all in OHIO

If I can't figure it out I might try and get video at that speed and let you hear the sound. I'm weary of that because I haven't really been over 85-90 lately. Who knows, I might get back in the mood to speed once my Jeep comes out of the shop.

yea that tis true. They look too much like the new jeep commander or whatever. Or is that my imagination?

SWB gets my vote

Practical? By what standards? For what purpose?

An XJ is in no way the most practical choice for me.

You said it, Junk! The Wrangler works for me, at least...................of course I've never owned an XJ, so that's not a real informed opinion.

Well, I don't know who got this whole voting thing started, but seems to me like we should go ahead, close the polls, and rightfully declare the mighty XJ the victor.

lol yea I started the poll not thinking it would be this big of a debate, but it was fun to watch the posts. I'll leave it and let the XJ count just dominate the polls. I had a 88YJ and 3 cherokees and I would choose my cherokees any day. Atleast for the stuff I do. I drive too fast(or atleast used to) to keep the YJ from rolling. I had it on 3 wheels a few times and it was pretty interesting. Plus I carry too much stuff to fit in a Wrangler without flying out the back or something.

Okay, okay.....I'll admit that if you're picking up a string bass from a trucking company....it's probably much easier (and safer) in an XJ!!!!
