Is it just me.....or.......

.....has anyone else noticed that the Wrangler MTR's (which are the stock tires on my heep) dont do very well on snow pack or ice? I love the tire! Great for rocks and mud! Now I know nothing does well on ice (except for maybe studs) but since I have been back in CO around all the snow, my Jeep slides around a bit on the snow pack. I have noticed that I tend to want to put it in 4X4 a lot just to feel a little safer. Being that my Jeep is mainly a daily driver, I am wondering if my next set of tires should be an all terrain......and maybe that will help more with traction in the winter months. Any thoughts?

Eric, its not you. I had the same problem when I lived in Wisconsin. Wrangler MTR's are crap. My Rubicon came with those on it stock. I did drive on the dreadful POS's until they wore down to near slicks only because I didn't have any money to get a better set of tires after spending $30,000 on a new Jeep. I hear there is a "new" version of these MTR's out on the market now and they are getting pretty good reviews. For traction on snow pack and ice you need a tire with good "siping". I now run the Interco TrXus tires from the Super Swamper line. It was really hilly in the area of Wisconsin where I used to work, I could make it up ice and snow pack covered streets that everyone else just slid right down after spinning their tires like crazy. I did not slid at all with these tires on snow pack. These tires are heavily siped for ice and snow and are an excellent winter driver. They are also excellent on rocks, slippery clay, mud and loose sand plus they are very mannerly on the street. After a day of rough wheeling in rocks and mud the ride home is pretty darn smooth. I am amazed at how well this tire performs. I'm on my second set of these and I will definitely buy a third set once these wear out. The only drawback to these tires is that they have a reputation of being a bit harder to balance than most but for the performance they give and for the price, IMO they are well worth it. I take mine to a reputable shop that specializes in balancing mud tires and I have never had a balancing issue yet. Do a little research and I'm sure you'll find something that will work for you, of course almost anything will be a LOT better than those dreadful MTR's. Good luck.
