drivetrain swap

Would the transmission transfer case from a 1976 Jeep Cherokee be the same transmission transfer case that were used in a 1978 Jeep CJ7? OR would it be different because the CJ is so much shorter than the Cherokee? I have found a 360 V8, auto transmission and transfer case from a 1976 Cherokee that I would like to transplant into my 1978 CJ7. The CJ currently has a 304, T-150 transmission and Dana 20 transfer case. I would appreciate any advise that I can get.

The 360 should plug into your trans and use the same motor mounts you have now

I have to be honest with you, im not sure about this. I believe the auto,s used in cj,s were th350 until the 80,s. So it may fit, the shaft length may need changed on the trans though, and dif lenght driveshafts. You will need a off set rearend which the donor vehicle should have in it. The quadra trac tcase is off set to the passenger side, and if you use a centered dif you will have ujoint binding.

anything will fit, depends how much work you want to dedicate to the swap.

Why remove a 304 for a 360, unless the motor is blown, I see absolutely no gains from the swap.

I have to agree really. there is about 25hp bwteen the two engines, so unless you are wanting a auto, I see no real gains in the swap either. your current 20tcase is better than the qudra trac. If you want the auto I believe you can get an adapter for the 20case.

CJ7 came with TH400/QT as an option, but Jeep NEVER used the TH350 from the factory. Only 25 HP difference, but more torque (like a CJ7 needs much) The factory D20 to TH400 adapter is pretty weak (flawed casting from the factory) so go aftermarket if you want that swap. Quadratrac is for those wanting allwheeldrive on the streets.
