Block heater?

Hey, i was just under the hood of my jeep (97 2.5L) when i say a male plug, ya know like off a light or something. Well, my first thought was that it might be a block heater, but i didnt understand why it would be back towards the fire wall. All that ive ever seen were just inside the grille. So i try to trace the wire, and guess what, it leads to a freeze plug on the engine block. Im not familer with block heaters so i was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is O.E. or something that the previous owner has installed. Is it worth running the plug to the front and pluggin it in on these cold winter nites?

Sure sounds like a block heater to me but I have not seen one in about 15 years when I lived in Alaska. Plug it in on a real cod night and it will start up real ez. I would just plug in an extention cord under the hood rather than reworking thi wire. Good Luck and welcome to the board Tug

What he said is he has a 97 4 banger with an electrial cord coming out of his freez plug. He was asking if we thought it was a block heater. Would it help to plug it in on really cold nights! [addsig]

It keeps the block heated so the oil and everything does not get all stiff. Yup it is an ez start even at way below zero temps. Tug[addsig]

hey guys...i need to chuckle....this is something we know all to well... it's -22 oc right now... and it's considered fair out side.. if our vehicles sit for more than 8 hours with out being pulgged in we will be catch'n the bus... like tug n pull said it helps to start after a really cold night.. now that you have a block heater you should now the rubber o-ring can fail and you will need to replace it after a couple of years... it will leak coolant and if ignored it will blow right out of the hole.. you will need to read the directions on the new one because there is a degree in which the element needs to be turned.. its relly striaght forward. When I was in college, we would go on a winter trip up north (Huntsville, Ontario) to live in a cabin for

8-10 days. We were about ten miles from the nearest paved road (a good 50 miles from Huntsville), and we

had to snowshoe our gear in a mile or so from where we parked the cars... When we made to leave at

the end of the trip, we would take aluminim foil pans and start a fire near the parking area. Then we would

put the coals on the foil pans and slide them under the engines of the cars that wouldn't start...



If only we had electricity back there. The block heaters would have been nice... Probably safer too.



Ahhh, I wish we still had access to that cabin. That was some pristine country up there...
