hello everyone. i got a question that i cant get an answer for from any one. i have a 97 TJ and its got the 2.5L 4cyl in it, and i want to put a 4.0L into it. Does any one know if the motor mounts on the frame need to be relocated? and does anyone know where i can find information on swaps like this? This is the last bit of information i need to know b4 i start my swap.
Thanks,
Ken

It should work I will double check but you will have to change the main coputer stuff....Good luck and welcome to the board...:)

thanks for the info josh. i allready knew about the comp and stuff... a allready have the computer and trans for the 4.0L all i need is the harness and theengine parts.... let me know what u find. thanks again

NOPE... different motor mounts, different computer, just as tough as swapping any other motor... except that the transmission will bolt up

u sure? i was told by a few ppl that the mounts r the same but they werent sure. and i know that the comp and harness and all that stupid stuff is different and i know for sure thast the trans is different i just did a trans in my jeep and i got the one for the 6 cyl and figured that it would fit but it didnt but a few people said that on the TJ the mounts for the 4 and 6cyl are the same and that the YJ wasnt the same do u know where i can get some inof on this kind of swap?

The transmission will NOT bolt up and the motor mount perches will have to be cut from the frame, and new ones fabbed or 4.0L perches welded to the frame.

A 4.0L swap is not a good choice for most, you are going through the trouble of swapping in an engine with marginal power that came stock in thousands of jeeps, that will have a cleaner install. Best to trade up to a 4.0L if you're bent on having one. Otherwise spend the money and time on a REAL power and performance improvement.

In your case, already having the 4.0L, it's a tough call since you're a few steps closer to a completed swap. If it were me, a GM 4.3L Vortec for v8 power in a compact lightweight package.

you're right... i forgot all about the bellhousings being different... and as well... i'm with you there... if you want good power from a small engine.. the chevy 4.3V is the way

They are correct the engine perches need to be cut and new ones welded on in place of the old ones ...Just a little difference not much though...:) Good luck////

oh well if im gunna go and start cuttin id rather swap in a 350. does any one know where i can get a parts list, and some sort of instructions on how i can start a project like this?

Advance Adapters makes an engine cradle style motor mount that will help you locate the engine in the bay, and there are good 3-row radiators out there just for this conversion.

Be sure to get the transmission and transfer case that came with the 350, this will save $$ on adapters and save headaches. Get the donor computer if you're going with FI.

I installed a 350 in my '88 YJ, so I'll help where I can. I used an adapter bellhousing and a carb, so it was pretty simple. I had the stock radiator rebuilt to 3-core and the lower neck moved to the opposite side, no cooling problems at all.

Tire Width vs. Wheel Width

that sounds good but if i use the transfercase that comes with the 350 wouldnt that b too long and make the drive shaft shorter? thats what someone told me

that sounds good but if i use the transfercase that comes with the 350 wouldnt that b too long and make the drive shaft shorter? thats what someone told me alsowhat about the transmission mount? is that a special mount i cant find one from advanced adapters, also how would i go about hooking up the tack rpm oil and temp sensors to my gauge Cluster? would i need to change the fuel pump?

if you go carbed, you don't need a fuel pump at all... if you go FI, you should be able to use your stock pump... as far as the transmission mounts, the transmission only mounts in 2 spots... one is at the motor, and one is at the a crossmember, which on your jeep, would happen to be the skidplate... there should be some sort of plate to mount to the transmission, so just get creative and figure a way to connect that to the skidplate... sometimes the Tcases are too long, and yes, that can create a problem for the driveshaft... then remember this... most Tcases have a fixed yoke rather than a slipyoke... that eliminates a few inches there... and then there are some cases that are pretty slim.... just measure your stock transmission and Tcase from bellhousing to tailshaft... then keep that in mind when choosing your upgrade

seen this bumper???

i have an automatic in my jeep right now and i dont really want to change everything and convert into a manual setup, i do alot of driving in NY traffic and a manual would be a pain in the butt, do you have any suggestions on what trans i should use? and if i go with an over drive trans wouldnt i have to change the shifter?

does anyone know where i can get some reading material on a v8 swap? i want more info and past problems and enperience on this before i start the swap. thanx
