I have a 92 yj and my 4 wheel drive went in and out while wheelin. I believe its the vacuum actuator defaulting. Is there a cheap fix? I herd that there is a cable conversion for this... Has anyone done this to there jeep? Im looking for a bit of info cause this is my first jeep...

i cannot link you because of work but if you use the search option, you should find tons of things by looking for cable actuator or something like that.

I found somewhere a description on how to do this with a locking pto/choke cable and a few fittings. I did this to my yj last year (mine was locked in 4wd continuosly) I love it (as long as I remember to lock it in before getting stuck) it gives you 2wd low range which is all u need sometimes. took me about 30-45 minutes in my driveway to do. Sorry I can't remember where the thread is but I'll look for ya

Welcome to the Z.

Remove the 4 bolts holding the disconnect actuator to the axle and pull the disconnect off. Slide the axle collar over to engage both axleshafts. Reinstall the disconnect upside down and it will hold the shift collar engaged.

Now you have 4wd, drive it and forget it.

Ive found a kit for $200. I cant have full time 4 wheel drive as I use my heep for a daily driver too. Theres a link im waiting on where a guy is buying the parts needed to do the conversion for $15 and using the stock actuator housing. If I get the diagram I may try this first and take pictures of the process and post them on here when I get the chance. Im kinda stuck in limbo tho cause ide like to do a axel swap front and rear. I get a little nervouse having a turbo 350 trany and a built 283 chevy small block lol

The heep lol

You will NOT have full time 4WD with what Bounty is suggesting; when you disengage the TC, you will have 2WD. This is the equivalent of having a solid front axle (like the TJ does, which uses the same TC as the YJ). I use a solid alloy axle up front, and the only difference is that the front DS will spin when driving, but since the TC is not engaged, it does not matter. I drive 600 miles from Panama City, Panama to San Jose, Costa Rica every 3 months, and have never had an issue with this setup.

Thanks for explaining that jfrabat I misunderstood that.. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow .. thanks superj I like the power I get from the 283.. I left all the plugs in tact so if I want to go back to the 6 cyl they are their. Might have to with the way gas prices are going...

I just pulled the timing chain out and did a gear drive set up. I like the whine it has now...
