83 cj7 engine swap question

so here is a question for ya'll, if i got my hands on a 304 or a 360, what transmission should i use to replace my sr-4? i would like options on automatic and manual... i use my 7 as my daily driver so it needs to be capable of 65 / 70 mph without burning a hole in the gas tank. (so prob. not a t-18 )

p.s. junkpile, i think you have convinced me to use AMC over Chevy :)

Hey, didn't expect all the replies to my little thread. Wow, certainly is a lot of info for me to take in. I appreciate the help you all have given. I'll be sure to take in everyone's view before making my decision. Thanks again for the help.

Manuals: T18 or T176
Autos: TF727, TF999 or TH400 from a wagoneer or quadratrac CJ
Note: The Th400 (quadratrac model) requires an adapter to the transfer case which means taking apart the transmission and replacing the tailshaft. The tailshaft was very long to go inside the quadratrac and was like a 10 spline. Novak has the adapter for the Jeep TH400 to Dana 300 for $425.

Sounds like Junkpile and Redrooster need to go wheeling together and have fun.
Any time. I'll bring the beer.
I want to hit Tellico early in the summer. Maybe some of you would be up for it, too.
