4.0 vs. 4.2

Looking to get my first Wrangler and it will be a daily driver.
I definatly want a 6 cyl. My Price range is $4,000 and I live in California.
Would prefer the 4.0 in a 92 or newer, but any reason not to look at say an 86-90 with the 4.2
How about 5sp VS. Auto ?

IMO, as a daily driver, i would prefer the 4.0 liter fuel injection over the 4.2 that's possibly still a carburated engine. Fuel injection will be more fuel efficient and more reliable. As for the transmission?, that's like a bowl of worms..It's more of a drivers preference than anything else.. I prefer a manual trans. over an automatic for the simple reason that i enjoy the torque on demand at the setting i wish for when i want it. Also, a manual trans is a lot easier to rebuild when i need to, rather than an automatic that has a hydraulic and electronic AND mechanical components that will eventually fail in time that leads to a costly repair and a pain in the ARSE. On the other hand, the automatic trans. is really convenient on a stop and go traffic and preffered by a lot of offroaders that wants the extra hand somewhere else like calling 911 for help or talking to their wives.

I would agree that EFI is the way to go and the 4.0 would be more likely as a later motor to have it. As for the auto or manual, again I concurr EXCEPT, I have driven some of the California freeways, blistering along at 23 MPH only to slam on the brakes, then hit the gas up to 34 MPH only to slam on the brakes and sit for 10 mins before taking off to 11 MPH and so on and so on. Get an automatic.

I've had CJ's, YJ's and TJ's. 7 total.
The CJ's and early YJ's had the 258 4.2
I don't like the carbs ,I like the 242 4.0 better. I also have had the sticks
and the auto's. I like my Auto in my 05 Rubicon with the 4:10's and 4to1
but did not like my none Rubicon 01 auto TJ to fast coming down hills off-road.

While I never had a 4.0L jeep, I did have a 4.0L ford exploder.

I know nothing of an EFI setup, being the caveman I am.

I do understand carbs a little, & my 1990 (last year for a carb) has the MC2100 I swapped in. It works pretty well with the Nutter & the Teamrush ignition upgrades.

The MC2100 works well in positions that would flood most carbs.

Of course EFI would pretty much work upside down, but I don't have any plans to do that with my jeep.
