1994 / ZJ / 4X4 / 5.2L transmission

Hello All,

My first post, sure hope I'm in the correct forum. Anyway, I was slowly restoring my 1994 Grand Cherokee, first the engine, then paint, front axels, and catalytic, when I ran into a wall. With 147K miles, the transmission began to give me problems. The transmission will not shift into third unless I put the gear in neutral and allow the RPM to settle, then shifting back to drive the transmission shifts into third and fourth. All other gears work great, including the O/D. Not sure what transmission I have, I think it is a 46RH, but it is a full time 4WD, with a HI/LO option. I found other similar threads, but none for this year make. I even bought an output speed sensor, but my transmission doesn't have one, it just has a vehicle speed sensor on the transfer case. The first thing I did was to check my fluid level, and it was OK, so then I replaced the filter and fluid (Castrol ATF+4, 4 Qts). Short of replacing the transmission, I'm out of ideas.

Please advice

Best Regards,

El Brujo

Bottle of Lubeguard for Mopar trans and then drop the valve body to clean it out if that doesn't work. Last step is trans overhaul. (although cleaning the governor in the trans tailstock might fix it too)

I don't think 4 qts. of ATF is enough to put the fluid in the specified range. They usually take 5qts. That speed sensor on the t.case is the output speed sensor. Shift issues between 2nd to third might indicate a faulty shift solenoid for that gear or a mechanical issue with the clutches within the selected gear in question.

Welcome Jose.

Fill out this form:
Contact Jeep
and ask for your "build sheet". They'll get back to you in a day or two with the entire build sheet for your Jeep including the tranmission, engine, floor mats, etc.

I will recheck the fluid level, and even try this Lubeguard stuff, I suppose it doesn't hurt. I've read another thread discussing a governer pressure sensor and solenoid, but it was for a 94 ZJ with a 4.0 and 42RE transmission. My son just told me that the transmission shifts OK when cold everytime.

I have a factory service manual, I'll see what it recommends, once I find it.

Thank you all,

:???:Well, I contacted Jeep as Terry suggested, they responded within 24 hrs; verey fast. I do have a 46RH as suspected, so no output speed sensor here. I also replaced the fluid twice, with new filters every time. Used Castrol ATF+4 fluid, again it only took 4 Qts. Lastly, I added a bottle of Lubeguard for Mopar trans as Carnuck recommended. The truck ran perfect for about a month, then the trany began to worsen in a hurry. Grinding, slipping, hard shifting, late shifting, you name it. I parked the truck again, awaitting a new trany.

Seeking recomenendations on a reputable trany shop, preferbly in the Kissimmee/Orlando FL area. I'm not letting my JEEP become a clunker, no way.

Regards,
