1987 YJ

I found an '87 YJ that has caught my eye.
The 258 6-cyl and a 5-speed combination.

Doing some research, I see that this 258
is not really much of a horsepower beast.
Although 210 ft-lb torque is not shabby.

Worst of all, more than one review that I
have read gives negative remarks to both
the transfer case and transmission in the 1987s.

Is this really true? Do they suck that bad?
Would a swap to a later model case/transmission
be all that bad of a project (if necessary)?

Just trying to verify '87 is not a lemon year!

hehehehehehehehehehehehe You have to be kidding! No one is really that narrow minded are they.

If it shifts and transfers it aint that bad. If it goes bad on you, you can aleways up grade to a better team. There are a bunch of them still on the road so yes they may not be the best but they are useable. tug[addsig]

Would upgrade swaps be, more or less, bolt-on changes?
By this I mean no fabrication, expensive adapters. or etc.

PS- Assuming that I upgrade to later model Jeep hardware.
Like... going to an NP-231 t-case and AX-15 transmission.

Its not bad how much are you looking to spend though?????

A fair amount less than $8000. :-)

The one that I am eyeing has less than 6" of lift.
Which is good, because I do not want too much.

Get a bone stock Yj.Ive looked at a bunch of lifted jeeps for sale and some people are just hacks when it comes to lifts and mods.It will also be cheaper. But it's your decision. Sully[addsig]

The one that I am eyeing has a 2" body lift.
It might be against the general Jeep rule, but
my Jeep is most likely going to be street duty.
So I do not need a big lift and huge tires. :)

if i'm not mistaken some of the old 87' had the np 231 i don't know about the transmission.check it to see what it has.also i think the np 231 fits into that 87' transmission.i seen those transmission for about 200-400 bucks hell i just got one for my 4 banger for 170 including the shipping, but if i was you i would just get a yj from 91 to 95 that way you'll get a fuel injected.[addsig]

Are there performance mods for the FI 6-cyls?
Altho, I do not really plan on adding too much.

i got my 87 for $800, and after replacing the intake and exhaust gaskets, changing all the fluids, motor mounts and giving it a tune up. it is running pretty good. but the main problem is that gremlin, the dreaded vacuum leak....my next project is to replace the clutch and the throw-out bearing.and a hurculiner interior. 800 buck and 1000 buck put it to it and i wouldn't change a thing[addsig]

yes it has the peugot trans. that is the only other downside. when i blow that one up i will find an ax-15 and hook that up to the dana 300 transfer case i have lying around.[addsig]

If that Jeep has the Peugeot BA-10/5 manual, might want to stay away from it :-O. I unfortunately have this transmission and have had problems with the 1st gear syncro. Also when I had to replace the Transmission mount, it was a very large unusual one. Nobody had ever heard of it except the dealership. Cost me $200 for the piece or metal/rubber :-x. Don't know if the wranglers have the same mount though.

Just a thought

Well, The Jeep actually belonged to my mom for many years and she never did anything special to it. she did drive it alot on unpaved roads (made it happy?). The current engine is it's second, the original AMC engine went a little over 350,000 miles! :-O and could have probably survived longer (I think it was nearing the end of its life due to bad mechanics.) Amazingly the interior and body have really held up (except the headliner and paint job) and now still are in great condition.

The thing that amazes me is that most of the problems this Jeep has had since new can be directly attributed to bad mechanics who either didn't know what they were doing, or cut corners (i.e. not installing thermostat, etc. :-x ). Needless to say since I've had the Jeep, not one of the parts i've replaced has given me any trouble and the used engine continues to run like new :-D.

yeah 87YJ's have the Peugeot BA/10 and the NP207 transfer case...both are widely scorned. However its not hard or expensive (do your own labor) to swap in an AX15/NP231 combo.[addsig]
