Window Tint

OK they say the only dumb question is the one you don´t ask. Wifes XJ has the plastic window tint from the factory (pretty dark). The rear window is also tinted, and in the rignt light or no light I´m blind backing up. The mirrors arn´t big enough to see much and when they are, rain spotted, impossible.
I want to take the layer of plastic (tint) off, but underneath is another layer of plastic with the rear window heater imbeded.
I think if I try and take it off, one the heater will want to come with it or two there is going to be left over glue to deal with and removing the glue is going to mess up the heater anyway.
Option 1. Wait till I back into something and the window breaks.
Option 2. Try and remove it, and if it messes up the rear window heater, try and order another.
Option3. (see option 1) forget the whole thing.
Option4. Install a serious back up light.

What do you think? Chuck :-?

Sounds like it would more of a pain in the A-- than it's worth Chuck, I'd go to a junk yard and find another glass w/o tint. Then if you want the tint put on an after market roll to the darkness desired. just another of my hair brained ideas  ......lol[addsig]

Most clean up or detail shops take that tint off for dealers, and a professional tint place could do it too. I'd let them have at it, I can't imagine it costing more than $20. Or, Hella makes a cool rear light with a metal grill called a Matador that mounts on your roof rack.
http://www.recoverygear.com/hella.html this is one like but a lot of places have them for under $50.[addsig]

chuck - i have the same "problem" in my XJ, but removing the tint would defeat the purpose of having it... privacy, less blinding sun and idiot's headlights blasting in at your eyeballs. when i need to back up and watch carefully, i just roll my window down and lean my head out. aren't factory tinted windows dipped? i've heard horror stories about people not having rear defrosters because they ripped them off with the tint... i wouldn't try it yourself if you still are considering it.[addsig]

Thanks for the imput guys. I´ll check with the dealer and see if he has somebody or if it´s possible. But that stuff has to go, backed into a bush the other night.
The roof rack mounted hella sounds good, I´ve ordered a trailer hitch and have been holding off until it comes, to check clearance for the back up light. Putting it up on the roof will get it out of harms way (mostly). Just got to watch the branches.[addsig]

i would suggest purchasing a new backup-light. IPF makes a great one called the 816 backup lamp (www.rocky-road.com/ipf.html). another option would be to simply buy some higher powered reverse lights. local auto-part stores (advanced auto and such) carry/can order replacement lights which are much more powerful. I think a serious back up light is the way to go. On the back of my YJ I have mounted a cheap but effective Plastic Rally Light a KC want to be down low but angled just a bit up. It is switched so it is good for backing in unknown areas and when I want it to be! Like when some rectal orifice is following with high beams. You should see em lower there beams and back off when you hit em with a bunch of candle watts. Tug  [addsig]

Your evil TUG, but we think the same. Got a red lens (cop) headlight in the garage I´ve been looking at, to mount inside my spare (on the YJ), a 55 watt stop light ought to get somebodies attention.
Police around here do alot of what they call lighting checks, just an excuse to stop you and look things over, but they will write a ticket for illegal lights. I don´t really give a darn, but I gotta be careful what I put on her car, don´t want to give her, another excuse to complain (she got plenty already). Over 25 years the list of complaints has kept right on growing, always seem to add more, never seem to loose any. :-D
On the last XJ, I put bigger bulbs in the back-up light and it started to sindge the plastic some, looked like it was starting to cook and melt a little.

If she were going to kill you or leave you she most likely would have done so already. mount here a 150 watt set on the back with burn away covers! She will love you for it once she figures how much fun they can be! lol Tug  [addsig]
