Winches

I'm considering buying a winch. First of all, are they worth the money and added weight, and second, which of the several winches on the market should I buy? Also, is water contamination an issue with winches?

RE: Re: RE: A not so satisfied user

First of all, yes, they are worth the money and added weight (IMHO), for peace of mind if nothing else. Which brand you buy is kinda like the purchase of anything else.......basically, you get what you pay for.....the cheaper ones are slower and probably have a shorter lifespan (my cheapo's still going). I know people on this site and others who do a who lotta winching swear by the Warn, but you're going to pay some bucks for a Warn. Alot depends upon how much winching you plan on doing. My $.02

I agree, you get what you pay for. If you dont see yourself really using it that much get a cheap-o. mile marker-maxx(something) are very decent. If you think you will be in alot of mud/water, get the 9500ti. Worth the money.(and alot of it it is) I have a warn 9500hs for about 5yrs, very good/and fast winch........It's all about the $$$$$..

RE: Spring perch attachment for YJ from FSJ (D 44)

Ya, they're definatly worth the money and weight. I've been stuck several times where it's either okward (sp?) or impossible for someone to pull me out with a strap. And of course, it's always a vehicle with a winch that comes to the rescue and has no trouble at all.

It's also cool to know you can try any obstacle and know that you have a way out...with the winch!

Warn is the only kind i've had any experience with...and all I can tell you is they are worth the money!! Oh, and get a good cover with whichever winch you go with--it helps them last a LOT longer.

RE: Re: MPG?

okay... dont want to "hijack" the thread but what about the receiver mount winches (like the generators you can get)? i have a front and rear rec. and was talking to a guy at work and i think its limited to the shear strength of the pin that holds it but the convenience is enticing (sp?) - any feedback

RE: Tire Choices

While the hitch pin is strong and will work, recevier hitches suck for approach and departure angles since you're often stuck with either the front or rear buried in the muck. You also can't do any amount of a side pull with a receiver mounted winch, too much leverage.

I've got a Warn 8274 that was built in '76, still running strong. It's completely seviceable and Warn still carries all the parts for it.

Many members of our local jeep club have the bargain winch from Harbor Frieght. It's a steal of a deal on a chinese made winch, but comes with mounting plate and roller fairlead. They have all worked well so far, seeing as how they get limited use here in the midwest. If it were used for more than pulling from the occasional mudhole, I'd buck up for a Warn.

RE: Re: RE: Winches

I agree with Bounty. The receiver hitch is ok you just want to pull straight back or forth and you want to lug that heavy thing back and forth. Hope you are not by yourself and in the mud. It can be pretty heavy and slick too. I also have an 8274 and would not trade it for anything. I would just go with a mounting plate and let it eat.

I thinking of buying a warn. What I'm considering is going cheap (relatively) and buying the m8000 w/roller fairlead for about $670, or going big and getting something like the 9.5ti for about $900. Any input? Maybe for water resistance I could take apart the m8000 and seal it with some rtv?

If you can get the 9500ti for 900 buy it. thats a good deal. thats what i pay'd for my hs. the 8000 is decent but just not very fast.(moving a little is better than not moving at all) Plus most of the winching you do is for other people anyway. If you have a cj, i'd go w/8274 they look better on the older rigs. I dont think they look good on the newer stuff though, go with a lower profile. Plus the 8000 and maybe the 9000 have the smaller motors than the 9500 and up one's.........
