I just recently changed my oil one my 6cyl, 4.0, 93YJ. I brought it to a Jiffy Lube place and had them put 10w-40 oil in it. Now I hear a ticking noise, kinda lick a lift tick, its constantly there! I didnt hear it before. I have 73,000 miles on it. Is there anything I can do to hide it or is that just a Jeep thing? Also how many quarts of oils does it require? Because if its 6 quarts they charge extra, but I was never charged extra?[addsig]

Use a synthetic 10W30 and the light valve tap or the piston slap you hear may diminish. I'm pretty sure it's 6 qts.[addsig]

Ok thank you I will definatly try that. I remember reading that somewhere else about synthetic oil. I was just hoping I didnt have to spend that extra money on that type of oil. Is there any type of oil treatment I cant try now, since I just had the oil changed?[addsig]

you could always run a quart of slick 50 in her with the next oil change.....great stuff for gaining comprision and sealing up leaks[addsig]

It is 6 quarts and I would change it as soon as possible. If bad noises are coming from the engine, fix it right away! I'd do it myself. Its not hard at all and most auto parts stores have free used oil recycling. Plus its cheaper to do it yourself. the places around here charge something like $23 to do it and I do it myself for less than $10.

there's a product called restore. it contains a copper compound (like the lining of your bearing caps) i've used it for years. pour it in your oil and the copper fills the gaps, scrapes, and pings in your engine. it's the first thing i put in a high mileage motor.

the thicking may indded be the tappets. get a section of garden hose about a meter long. hold one end to your ear and move the other open end over the valve cover with the motor idling. you'll hear the tappets clicking if it is them making the noise.

regarding your super-duper-lube. change your oil yourself. torque your pan plug, clean the filter mating area, look at the oil that comes out of your engine.

trust no one.

mcdonnalds, burger king, jiffy lube.

no offense to those of us that took that route earlier in our lives.

Ok I heard of Restore, I remember seeing it at my local autoparts store. I will check it out. Ive gotten so much good advice from this message board, now it will just be trial and error untill I find the best solution. Its true I should do my own oil change. Its easy enough to get under there anyway. Just one thing when you say tappets I awesome thats the same as a lifter? If thats the case can they be adjusted?[addsig]

tappets are the adjusting screw/nuts on solid lifters - i'm dating myself. tappets are old school, sorry.

you have hydraulic lifters, they're's no adjustment beyond the original lash, but they are self -adjusting and you shouldn't need to adjust them. in the day of solids, you had to adjust them weekly.

it's unlikely that the sound you're hearing came from the oil change. not much you can do to an oil change short of not putting enough oil in there.

have you checked the level?

Just wanted to say thanks for the advise. I also recently stopped by my Jeep Dealership and had one of the mechanics checkit out. They said that there is absolutly nothing wrong with my engine. I said what about that noise they said that is normal. I kinda fell better now. I decided I am going to start doing my on oil cahnges and use sythetic oil plus a slick50 type treatment.
Thanks Again [addsig]
