What's the right size D or U shackle?

I need some tow points for my new bumper, and I see that I've got a few choices. What should I get - a D or U shackle (I'm guessing D), and after that, what size - 3/4, 5/8, 7/8

I'm thinking that 5/8 is about right, but I figured I'd ask the experts.

Get the ones that you can unscrew the backside and take them off. You'll thank yourself for it. I got a set of permanent d-rings for free so I welded them to the bumper and on top of being very very noisy they are a little inconvenient to use waste deep in mud. You have to loop the strap on itself to attach it to the ring and you can only do that on one side of the strap so you have to carry a d-ring with the screw out type for the other side anyways. After the pull the strap tightens down where it is looped on itself and becomes a pain to get back out, esp. if you had to jerk hard to get unstuck. If I had to redo my bumper I'd put mounts for the removable d rings from the beginning. 5/8 should be strong enough for any type of pull but you might want to make sure it'll fit over the strap obviously.

There is an easy fix to the noise the D ring makes when driving.PLace a magnet on the bumper under the D ring, then it will just stick there and not rattle around.

There are 2 MFG's of "D" rings. Make sure you get the USA made, because there manufactured under DOT/MSA standards for material and load strength.
When you load them for pulling some one remember to tighten then back them off a 1/16th of a turn, so you can unscrew them later on.
5/8 and 3/4 are fine, I run 3/4's on my jeep.

D rings are over rated Terry, Bungee cords are the new rage.

I think mine are 3/4 and made in USA, I have like 4 of them, and I never use them (offroad, I do use the mto pull shrubs out on my property.) I found it just way easier to just stick the strap end in to the 2" receiver and stick the receiver pin threw the strap, way quicker and no need to worry about over tighten D rings. On the front I have old school hooks.
