Weber 551-34 any thoughts?

I am considering purchasing what is supposedly a lightly used weber 551-34 for my 74 258? Is this a good move? How does it compare to the 32/36 I hear so much about?

The Weber 551-34 actually reffers to the whole installation kit. The carb is a 34 DGEC progessive 2 barrel w/eletcric choke. It was offered early on by Weber as a direct replacement for the factory equipped Charter 2bbl's.

It is slightly smaller than the 32/36, funtionally similiar.

Well......Thanks! It's only rated at a max of 300cfm. It will be an improvement to your stock set up, but if your build is moving more towards the "mild" side of stock upgrades, it will ultimately be under rated by the cam and intake.

If your getting it used, be sure to get the base plate adp. and throttle linkage. However, since you work for a GM dealer (if I remember correctly?), you can probably fabricate a more efficent linkage.

I do work at a dealer. I've been thinking about it and only being conserned with sound I think I'm gonna leave engine as is because I'm afraid I'm gonna spend all this money for a sound and it will be annoying to drive so I think I'm just going to build on what I've got. I thought when I replaced the carb it was a one barrel but it had the edelbrock intake with a 2bbd and i didn't know what I was looking at. I had already ordered the 1bbl I believe it is and couldn't return it so at this point I have a 1bbl on a 1-2 barrel adapter turned upside down :( so I guess I'm gonna try to find a 2bbd or weber.? What do you think? Can I get a 2bbd without the electric motor on it?

When you say electric motor, do you mean the stepper motor? If so, the stepper can be un-plugged and manually stepped to a good setting. The Weber you are asking about will out perform either of the stock carbs., but then again I'm a Weber fan! You can get a 2 bbl used factory style carb from Ebay for a resonable amount or if you can wait a few weeks, I have a 2 bbl Carter from the 86 I'm restoring.I'll gladly pass it along to you at a very fair price as I have no use for it after I set up the motor for the Weber.

Oh.....By the way, since you're a GM tech with a background in Fuel Injection, I also have a Holley TBI unit that came off the block I just bought. It's an older (1 bbl eqvilant) unit without the harness or CPU, but it did work prior to removal. It's up for grabs as well............
