Would you happen to know the guage wire used from the factory? Should I step it up a guage just to be safe?

I think 6 gauge. I'd have to look. Personally I'd replace with 4 or 2 gauge multi stranded copper, soldering the ends into gold connectors. Be sure the ends are taped and or shrink wrapped to keep moisture out.
