Transmission

I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Took it mudding up to the top of the tires with no lift. I have 1 month remaining on my warranty. Took it in because it wasn't shifting past 3rd & was shifting hard from Park to Reverse & from Park to Drive. They are replacing the valve in the transmission & there was a leak in the oil pan they fixed. Are these things from simple mudding & something I should watch in the future?

Mud and water is hard on an automatic transmission, especially when you're that deep. You have a good service department if they didn't balk at all the mud on the drivetrain.

Thanks Bounty_Hunter! My warranty is up next month. So, should I stick to trails only until I do some lifts, etc? I saw something about purchasing off-road terrain warranty once my warranty is up...would this be beneficial? Any advice you have is appreciated so I can enjoy my Jeep for what I want to do with it & still not tear it up! I'm a first time Jeep owner so all of this is new to me.

I've never heard of off-road warranty - what does that cover? I'd have to read the fine print pretty good.

As to your problems, do you know if the transmission pan was banged up from offroading? I wonder if the bad pan caused you to leak out transmission fluid.

I wanted a bit more protection under my Jeep, so I bought a new skidplate for both the transmission and the engine. It's expensive, but it does help. You can see more here:

No, the transmission fluid was fine. It was the oil pan that had a leak, not the transmission pan. Yes, we just talked about getting a skid plate as an added protection. Thx!!

Sounds like an extended warranty would be beneficial to you. I purchased one for my Grand Cherokee, just used it this week.

The only time you should drive through mud is when you cannot drive around it. If your dealer gives you any crap about your mud clogged vehicle just say, "I couldn't drive around the mud". Yer covered.
