I have a 1998 TJ 4.0 5 speed, and in reverse, 1st, and 2nd gears, it makes this irritating whining noise, and it seems that the shifter is shaking a bit much, any ideas? do I need a clutch? transmission mounts? :-? [addsig]
Change the gear oil ASAP :-O Chrysler recommended the wrong gear oil in the owner's manuals when the recommended a GL5 rated oil. GL5 has a high sulfer content and is corrosive to the soft brass synchronizers in your Aisin/Warner AX15 transmission. Use Redline MT90 or GM Synchromesh, both which are specially formulated to be easy on the soft metal.[addsig]
I'll change the gear oil tomorrow morning at my shore house (thats where my ramps and tools and stuff are. any other ideas? I just got this thing, I hope the bastard that had it before me didnt kill the transmission of there will be hell to pay[addsig]
I had a 87 Wrangler and the input gears went out... Sounded just like you said.. Grinds in the gears... It happen to be a peugot trans too !!!! Its just like someone elses reply sometimes they tell you the wrong oil... It was recommend staight 30 W oil...
Dont know if this helps but just thought I would let you know... Bad experence !! Cost $750...
Well, me and my uncle (hes a mechanic) are gonna have at it tomorrow. Hopefully I wont have to replace/rebuild the transmission, I just spend 12k on the car, dont need to blow another grand cause some asshole didnt take care of it right.[addsig]
Mobil1 is a GL5, thus is corrosive due to the high sulfer content. Redline MT90 is synthetic and the way to go, don't know if GM Synchromesh is syn or not, anybody? I just checked a bottle and nothing said syn.
Never heard of GL6, I wouldn't use it since 4 and 5 are high in sulfer content.[addsig]
to snitty about first in a ax-15 not being syncronized, if you can shift it into first at any moving speed it will grind, you have to be COMPLETLY stoped to shift in to first in an un-syncronized transmission[addsig]
well... whether synchronized or not... in any gear, excluding reverse because of the mechanics of it, you can shift into it without grinding if the speeds of the transmission and engine correspond with each other... plus... it is often tough, and it is suggested NOT to shift into first at any speed over 3 mph[addsig]
