i cant figure out how to get the gear lever out of the transmission i got to get it out so i can pull the trans out to put in a new clutch

What transmission & vehicle? The T150 3speed has a pin the goes thru the ball near the bottom of the lever. If you remove the pin the lever will lift right out.

The '82 J10 came with the T18-4spd or the T176-4spd.
The t18 is just like the T150. Screw the cap off of the case(where the lever enters the case). There is a pin in the threaded part of the case.Remove the pin & the lever will lift out.
The T176 has a retainer where the lever enters the case.Press & turn the retainer & the lever will lift out.
Please Note: I've never taken a T176 apart(these are the Chiltons instructions). Maybe someone who has done it can add something. Good Luck & let us know how it goes.

Transmission >> out. Remove pressure plate. Examine flywheel....Good??....Bad? (grooved, scored, dark blue spots?) If flywheel is bad >>>, have a shop clean it up. If good, get clutch alignment tool (Autozone), replace pilot bearing, put new clutch pad on (using alignment tool) set pressure plate in place. Tighten to specs. (read-up on this part!). Next, replace throw-out bearing, then mount back to motor. Just a quick how-to. You ought to get a Chilton's or Haynes manual and look into it further. LAter
