transmission leak at speedometer cable

i'm leaking transmission fluid right at the end of the speedometer. could this be transmission problem or do i need a new speedometer cable??

sounds like a minor seal leak.

except my speedometer doesn't work. The speedometer not working and the leak started at the same time. Could that still be a seal problem?

Sounds like the cable snapped off and ground through the sleeve, allowing oil to leak from the trans, OR someone forgot to put the bolt in place that holds the speedo gear in the trans, or worst case scenario is some &^%$@#@* stole your speedo gear (happened to me in my old Dodge)
