ive got an 86 xj with 4wd and working transfer case, and a 91 xj that needs a new transfer case, in my 86, the transfer case has 2wd, 4wd, N, 4LO. and on the 91 it has all the same and them a 4wd part t ime, will the transfer case from the 86 fit on there? help me please??!?!?!

it should fit... you can check the exact model number of both t-cases though just to make sure. judging by what you said though i think it should fit. i don't know a whole lot about the older cherokees, but i know the newer ones come with either selectrac (2WD, 4WD full, 4WD part, N, 4WD LOW) or commandtrac (2WD, 4WD part, N, 4WD LOW).

The important thing is what transmission are they behind? Different trannies, and even the same trannies over different years, have different output spline counts and depth.
If the transfer case inputs are the same, they'll interchange.
If the transfer case inputs are the same, they'll interchange.
