Transfer case question

I'm rebuilding a NP 231 to replace my 207. It's torn down now. How much play should there be between the input gear and the planetary gears?

Fore and aft or up and down? I've never noticed any when rebuilding a 231, I just bolt it together and go. What problem are you running into?

Not really a problem that I know of. It is side to side at the point it contacts the 3 low range gears within the planetary. I can't see that anything is worn on any of the gears. The movement is very little, but I want to make sure it is within specs as close as I can. It's just something I noticed when I tore it down.

The mainshaft will hold it centered, I wouldn't worry about it. Let me know if you need any 231 parts.
