Too Much Excitement

We had some good riding and major excitement yesterday. Everyone in our group was walking the dog all day, so we decided that our last trail would be the infamous Cable Hill, the nastiest at Gray Rock. It's a long steep hill that goes near vertical at the end. You have to be committed to take it to the top of this one.
The three in front of me made it with minimal trouble. I made it without drama. The samurai behind me was another story. He came up as I was parking. I heard a motor rev and looked back to see the undercarriage and a loud crash. He went over backwards, landed on the bank on its roof, did a side roll back on its wheels pointing the wrong way and endoed down hill. As it endoed a small sapling snagged the back tire and kept it from going end over all the way down the trail. Scared the crap out of everybody. Nobody was hurt, sammi was toast from the firewall forward including the frame. It was the first time I have seen a winch broken in half.
When I ran/slid down the hill to help, my first thought of the crash scene was "lawn dart." That's how bad the sammi nose dived down hill as it came about.

he better get a jeep huh.

That's the first thing I told him once we knew everyone was safe.
His wife was trying to talk him into a four seat rig anyway so the whole family can go together. He has another stock Sammi and the wrecked one is good from the cowl back. I'm trying to talk him into doing this:

In Samurai form, it won't be so long and limo looking. It should put him right where he needs to be as far as wheelbase.

I witnessed my first trail rig roll-over last week. They are very scary to witness.

I've lost count of how many I have witnessed. Fortunately, most of them were mild layovers. It's the end over end ones that are so bad. This one could have had a terrible outcome. They were lucky to say the least.
Some other new friends of mine also rolled on saturday going down a trail called Buzzard's Roost. They were in a chopped top Wagoneer on tons and 38's. It endoed over on the lid then rolled on it's side. They were pretty shaken up, but no one was injured. The vehicle sustained a damaged quarter, hood windshield and frame and rear door. It's a cool rig, so I hope they put it back together and show up for the next ride.
Hopefully someone will come up with some pics of the Sammi rollover. It will really show the value of a full roll cage.

Wow. Stock Jeeps are bad enough on the vertical stuff, those sammi's are really short. The difference between gutsy and stupid is making it

He said he was in 2nd gear and never let up. "I was trying to keep up with all these Jeeps."
He has (had) a slightly stretched wheelbase, but it's still short. The rest of us however are sitting in the 115 to 117" range. Longer wheelbase makes the hill climbs much more comfortable.
I hear there is video, but have yet to get a copy.
