ok at some point i plan to lift and get 33" MT/R's on black rockcrawler or american racing rims. im not sure how wide the MT/R's come but id guess 11.50 or 12.50, anyways. how wide would the rims need to be to fit those? is there any chance i could get the blackrims now and have them mounted on my factory 225/75/15 tires and still have the MT/R's work on the same rim. im kinda poor at the moment but want those black rims really badly! there any chance i could get a rim that would accomodate both tires?[addsig]

11.50 is best with a 15x8 rim. 12.50 with a 15x10. However, it's the back spacing that really determines the stance. Just looking at pic's, 11.50 with 15x8 rims and 4.5" back spacing looks pretty sweet.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that 12.50 won't fit on the factory rims.

12.50 will fit on an 8" rim and is often done to help keep rock rash off the lip of the rim and debris out of the bead. You have to run less air on the road with an 8" rim to get a flatter contact patch for even wear.

You'll need a lot of negative backspacing in your rim to clear control arms and leaf springs, which probably means new rims, or wheel spacers. You will also need 6"+ lift to clear 33" tires on an XJ, unless you cut the fenders.[addsig]

6 inches? jeeez, how much fender cutting we talking? how bout if i just remove the fenders? would they clear then? im doing 4.5" and following scott brayshaw's lead with the 32's, but i was considering the 33's so i could get the baja claws or MTR's. otherwise im going with 32' swamper sx's[addsig]

The Swampers run tall, so the 32" will be comparable to other manufacturer's 33" tire.
You'll still need more than a 4.5" lift. The fender trimming would be whatever is necessary, and you'd have to remove the stock fender flares. Have you checked out the National XJ Association?[addsig]

i read the rustys write up on his install and he said he only did minor trimming to his fenders and bullbar (dont know how you can trim a bull bar but thats what it says) how much effort would the "minor trimming" be? like is it a matter of just hackin away or is it sort of more complicated?[addsig]

A bullbar can be trimmed, it's just metal  I trimmed my fenders with a jigsaw with a metal blade. Just trim a little at a time, whatever your comfortable with. Then flex the suspension and turn the wheels back and forth. Trim wherever it hits. You can also use an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel, which works good to clean up any rough cuts.

I've seen a few XJ's with TJ rear flares installed all the way around, and some have used TJ fronts in the front but it's a matter of personal taste.[addsig]

do TJ flares bolt on directly? will they clear the 32s?[addsig]

I've thought of doing that cuz of money problems but it won't work if you are drinving a YJ. The leaf springs will get in the way when you turn. You need an offset to push your tires out to make them fit. You have to run a minimium of 8" rim width to mount 33 x 12.5 tire. [addsig]

Shoot! My last message I posted was my first one ever and I didn't see the vehicle make you were driving! Sorry.... Ignore my last message. :p [addsig]

My 95 XJ runs 4 inches of lift. I got about 4.5 inches of total lift. I had to trim a LOT, I repeat... a LOT off the fenders to fit my 33x12.50R15 Super Swamper TSLs. They measure 33.7 inches tall. I got bushwackers on there to cover them up. If I were you, I would go straight to getting a 6 inch lift or possibly... (if you have $$$) a skyjacker rockready 8 inch suspension lift. I guarantee you, it will be worth it. You can fit 35's on with the 8 inch lift. With my trimming, I would probably be able to fit 38's on with an 8 inch lift... That's my next goal. Heheheeheheh! Ming... I plan on posting some pics as soon as my floor is finished with the Line-X and the stroker is still being rebuilt now. I'm currently waiting for the borla header and cat back system. I would be happy to provide pics. I will be posting here on the Reader's Rides and on www.jeepin.com . If you go to jeepin.com gallery page 62 my jeep is there. Its the green one with silver stripes (from my rice boy era) and it was not lifted at that time.[addsig]

Let's see here. I came across this picture of my truck right about december 2002. This was before I got the bushwacker flares. Those are my 33x12.50R15 Super Swamper TSLs on a 4.5 inch lift. My truck is the one on the far left. I will provide more pics later.

Actually. They are standard swampers. Boggers are wayyy out of my price league! The hood is composed of lund eclipse hood scoops which I cut out to make functional. They are also riveted to the hood. It is nice looking isn't it? More pics coming when I finish my stroker. [addsig]

Plus, the entire body is in near mint condition. It is the original paint. Moss Green Pearl color. I promise my next pic will show the Jeep in it's full glory with full gloss!![addsig]
