tf999 question

first of all, this is that transmission that would be in my 87 6 cylinder wrangler, right? everything i read says that is what is in it.

second, for some reason, i am losing reverse. forward gears are perfect but reverse is slowly taking longer and longer to engage. i put it in gear and no more solid clunk of everything changing direction. now it kind of sits and slowly tries to move backward and if you give it any gas, it just revs up and the jeep stops moving. if you let it sit for a while, it will eventually get moving and back up like normal. every once in a while, it does engage just like normal though. are there any reverse bands that can be adjusted or am i just SOL?

i am asking because there are two jeep auto trannies on craigslist right now so if this one is kicking the bucket, i will grab one of those and swap it out.

I believe an AW4 from an XJ is a direct swap as well as an upgrade., but you should verify that. I think both are 21 spline.

aw4 from a cherokee? that works good because a guy local is selling a 4.0 with harness and auto transmission from a 95 cherokee. i will have to look into that and see if its all the right stuff. that would be great to get fuel injection and a good transmission all in one shot.

no ideas on the other stuff though, from anyone else

The 95 would have a 23 spline output so unless it has the t-case with it you would be swapping the input on yours. AW4s are nice and have OD. Make sure you get the controller for it because it's an electronic overdrive.

that's what i thought, on the electronic part. have to find out the spline count for sure on this one since i have found conflicting stories whether the 87 wrangler is 23 or 21

3 speed auto is 23 spline (even 4 cyl). There is a depth difference in the inputs of the 999 and AW4 tcases.
I put an AW4 in my J10 and had to put a 1" spacer between it and the NP208 (or any of the '80 up FSJ tcases)

i think my problem might be fixable by adjusting the band tension and doing a filter fluid change. i didn't have this trouble until i added some fluid one time after a long drive. i had also previously adjusted the carb and timing and i think the idle is not right. i think fixing the idle with the band adjustement being done will fix the reverse problem.

also, all the trannies for sale local sold so no quick fix
