Temp gauge

installed new speedometer and I am having temperature gauge problems. It will read cold and then almost high. This is on a 1983 cj7. I would like to keep it original, do not really want to add a mech gauge. I have good grounds etc.

How about the connector link between the temp gauge and the fuel gauge? Is it there? It is a wire that connects the two gauges. Also have you checked the insulators? They are pads behind the gauges, maybe something is shorting out.

X2, also check the resistor bar across the fuel and temp gauge. Sometimes when an insulator is not doing its job, the resistance will almost go up to a battery voltage and peg up the needle on the temp gauge.
