Tank at 1/4 = E

Hey guys,
A few weeks back I replaced my fuel tank and skid since my jeep fell off the jackstands and destroyed the skid. I got the tank and skid from a 90 YJ.
I was leaving a friends house, when my jeep didn't start. The fuel gauge said I had more than a quarter tank so I was fooling with it for an hour until I figured out it was out of gas.
Confused, I went to the gas station to fill the rest of the tank just to get more confused.

Note: I never have put more than 14 gal in my jeep...

I am filling the tank... 14 gal... 15 gal... 16...17... 18... 19+ gallons!

Well I figured somewhere during the install I did the 15 gal to 20 gal conversion.... which is nice, but now my gas gauge is waaaay off. I am about 80 miles into the tank, it still reads full.

So just wondering if anyone has done that conversion, and is that a common side effect? I really don't want to take the tank off to fix the problem either... I'll probably just live with it, and scratch a new "E" line on the fuel gauge!

Any input would be great... but to most of you it's just a story. No biggie!

is the tank empty or is your fuel pick up just not long enough to get the fuel at the bottom of the tank or you could have accidentailly knocked off the pick up tube off in your swap.

I would say look got the right sending unit/pickup or just remember to get gas when you have 1/2 a tank

Mine stays full for a bit over 100 miles, but empty is empty; at 1/4 I still got about 40 miles left of fuel.

The tank was identical in size, I used the stock sending unit which was working at the time. The only difference is that there was a little plastic 'tub' lookin thing that was stuck to the bottom of the tank which helped hold the long screen gas filter in. Since it broke off, I just trashed it and attached the filter on the fuel pump another way.
We will see what happens when I go through this tank. It will be a little while though!

I have the opposite problem although it's a minor one. It seems that no matter how much gas I put in the tank it never actually gets to the full line. My gauge always shows a full tank a little less than all the way full. I know that all gas gauges are different. But in my experience in most of them the line that shows how much gas you have always goes both above and below the lines that indicate full or empty. Do jeep gas gauges work that way? In other words does the indicator line go above and below the gas gauge full and empty lines? I know on some gauges the indicator line stays within the full and empty lines. On my old F150 pickup the full and empty lines are only a guideline. When filling up it goes way beyond the full line. I don't know about the empty line as I never let it get that low. So what are the gas gauges in jeeps supposed to do? Stay withing the lines or go beyond them? Let me guess, it depends on what model jeep and what gauges are in it, so they are all different. My jeep is a '74 CJ5. So what do they act line in those?
