Hey all,

Man, it's been a while. I used to be here daily until last Jan. when I sold My TJ (I know, I know....). I used the name Roundeye, but it won't let me log in here now. Maybe it's because I sold my Jeep?

Anyway, I have a good friend of mine who has a 1987 YJ Wrangler with 4.0, auto trans with a busted transfer case. We found a wrecked 1996 Cherokee Sport with 4.0, auto trans 4X4.

They appear to both have a NP231 transfer case......will the t-case from the XJ bolt right on to a YJ?

Thanks in advance...

first off they didnt put the 4.0 in a YJ in 87'. and i'd double check the spline count on the t/c to make sure it's not a 207 instead of a 231. If the splines are the same the case's will work.

According to Advance Adapters, the 999 and 904 automatics from 87 to 2002 used a flush 23 spline input. The AW4 used a flush 21 spline. So I guess it depends on what 2 automatics you have. The bolt pattern should be ok as long as your spline count is good. And I would agree with YJDave. Look at the tag on the case to see if it is a 207 or 231. My 87 has a 207 until I can find an affordable 231.

RE: soft top protectant

Thanks for the replies. My bad about the 4.0 in the '87. It does have a straight 6 though.

I know for sure by looking at the data plate on the busted '87 YJ t-case that it is a NP231. I have not gotten a close look at the data plate on the '96 XJ, though it IS a NP, I just have not looked at what model NP t-case it is. I'm guessing it will be the usual 231.

Correct me if I'm wrong: If the '87 YJ and the '96 XJ both have NP231 t-cases, the '87 will likely have a 21 spline and the '96 will have a 23 spline, right?

If so, will the entire transmission and t-case from the '96 XJ (which has a 4.0) bolt up in a '87 YJ ?(which also has a straight 6) Again, both are automatics.

Thanks again

The automatics are different. The xj has a computer controlled 4sp while the yj has a standard 3sp.

RE: Re: Jeepz Message Board is now working?

The YJ should have a long input, likely 23 spline. The AW4 from the XJ will be a short 23 spline. You'll run into problems if you simply verify the spline count and throw it in. Check www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np231.htm for a good chart on the different input shafts offered.

You can swap the YJ input shaft into the XJ transfer case. The XJ transfer case is clocked differently, the front output hangs a little lower when bolted to the transmission. You might run into difficulties here.

RE: Marvel Mystery Oil

I'm not disputing you Bounty, but isn't the clocking difference on the transmission instead of the transfer case? That's what I've been told, but haven't verified it myself.
