I bought this jeep and the ignition doesn't work, big surprise. Well, I took the Haynes Jeep manual and tried to replace the thing. That book makes NO sense what so ever!

How do I replace the ignition switch in a 76 CJ7? :-? :-? :-x :-x :-x [addsig]

I would just like to have an update on my ignition lock experience. I broke the steering wheel and also the horn mechanism. I am slightly perturbed about that. What in the world!!! Anyway, please tell me how to replace the ignition lock! :-x :-x :-x :-? :-? [addsig]

isn't there a hole to stick a drill bit into with the key in the lock that releases the tumbler?

how did you break your steering wheel? :-( [addsig]

I don't have the key, and where is the hole? The lock is stripped out.

I broke the steering wheel puller bolt off inside the hole to pull it. I know I could probably get the bolt out by drilling it but the way it is stuck in there it would be a serious project. It's cool though about that because I was gonna get a new wheel anyways.[addsig]

Ok...if the wheel is off... remove the anti theft lock plate....go to AutoZone and buy a tool.. it pushes the plate in so you can remove the retainer ring..also helps to reinstall it..costs less than 20 bucks... remove the plate.. unscrew the turnsignal switch and pull it up and over the steering shaft out of the way..(should pull up that much but be gentle). Now look at the housing where the lock is... now look at your new lock mechanism to gain an idea of how this works... on the opposite end from where the key goes in...there should be a black metal "latch" that when inserted in the casting "locks" in place...there is a rectangular area in the casting that must be punched thru to reach the "latch" on the old switch..punch it thru..push the "latch" and pull..this SHOULD get it out....cross your fingers...the old switch is supposed to be in the "on " position to remove it if my memory cell still works..if the new lock mechanism lacks a "latch" and you find a phillips head screw..unscrew the screw...hope this helps...Dawg
