"Status", post counts, and problems therein...

Apparently these labels were halted once because of problems and maybe it wasn't such a good idea to bring them back. I think the post count and the titles should go. The Joined date could stay, and really what does it matter how many times someone posts anyway?

Firemanharry has left the forum. He was a bit insulted and although at first it seemed he was a bit overly sensitive, I don't blame him a bit. He is a good guy and has a lot to contribute, yet carries a "Training Wheels" label. :?

I have come to have a good working knowledge of Jeeps, suspensions. Mildly built 2 Jeeps myself, done alot of local wheelin', but let's face it - I am no "Trail Leader" just because I have spent alot of time on this forum. When the rubber hits the dirt, I'm still a follower and have a lot to learn. Why should I look like the "experienced guy" under my username and avatar???

Plenty of good advice and tech info comes from newbies and "old timers", why give a false impression of experience?

I just don't know folks. I think this post count and "status" thing is a mistake.

What do you all think? No poll here, looking for opinions - not just keep 'em or dump 'em, explain yourself.

I dont mind the post counts, But I dont think anybody likes being labeled.

I have no problems with the post counts, in fact I like having them there. It shows who the regular members are and who is just here today for a quick question and gone tomorrow never to be heard from again. As for the title, it doesn't bother me but I could see why "training wheels" might offend other more sensitive people.

I don't think the labels should be as "harsh" as they are for the people with fewer post counts. We should come up with new names that are more appealing than "riding shotgun" and "training wheels". Just my thoughts on the matter. As for me I don't care what you call me, I'm a pretty laid back kind of guy.

I wouldnt mind having 35in training wheels atleast i would be driving my jeep instead of letting somebody else while i am riding shotgun.

Dump the ranks, keep the post count.

We have some very knowledgeable jeepers here with low post counts, and some of the ranks appear a little berating in their apparent attempt at being humerous.

I'm sorry I haven't been on in a few days, seems a lot has transpired, and I would hate to think a part of the jeepz family would leave because of a rank.

IMO I do agree with Craig...I like the post count to see who the regs are. I'm not offended by being labeled "riding shotgun"..... but it is not becoming of my personality.....I prefer to be in control.

MY VOTE (if there is a vote)

keep the counts...lose the labels

Dont bother me a bit either way, but if they offend some people, get rid of it.

honestyl TC, does it really matter, take'em away if you want, keep them if you want, it really is a insignificant thing to me personally, but... while they are there I will continue to revel in teh fact that I am a "Groupie!" hehe

RE: Re: RE: Check this out

I think they are funny, and when I saw I was a groupie I reveled in it. I'm surprised by Firemanharry's departure. If it offends, then dump them, but I do think quite frankly that's a strange reason to leave. It's all in fun. Hell, put "Jeep wuss" next to my name and I'll have a great time laughing about it.

He, FiremanHarry, know's his stuff. I'm sad to see him go. Are you sure he's left?

He left his e-mail in aother post...maybe one of the higher-ups should drop him a note....

i agree with that completely. i think "rollover waiting to happen" is a pretty sick label.

but frankly, with all due respect to firemanharry and his knowledge that far exceeds mine, leaving this forum because of the label is as juvenille as he probably thought the label was. does it really matter? i mean i'm probably one of the most laid back people around, so it doesnt effect me, but i cant really even see where someone who is not as laid back should even waste their time thinking about something like that.

give me and mingez "Jeep wuss" labels please. or any other label you can think about. because when it all comes down to it, it shouldnt be the label that matters, it should be the text of your post, and the fact that the red sox won the world series in your signature that carry the value.

Yeah, I emailed back and forth with him. It goes a little deeper than the rank stuff, but I'm not going to try to speak for the guy. At any rate it seems as though he will not be back, but who knows...

I am down either way. Take em or leave em. I think they are kinda funny and you have to have pretty thin skin to let something like that bother you that much

RE: Re: RE: "Status", post counts, and problems th

I have met firemanharry on a couple instances, he and his buddies have helped me out more than once with my jeep mods. They even called me up and asked me if I needed help putting my steering box in!! There a bunch of great guys, and REALLY know their way around a jeep... heck, any vehicle for that matter. I can see how Firemanharry would take offense to this. I think the labels don't really add anything, though fun for some maybe, and should be removed if it causes stuff like this to happen. The post count has a function as others mentioned earlier.

OR if the labels really need to stay:
0-100 - noob
100-250- To busy wheelin to post
....
1001- 2000 - post fluffer
2001 and up- Likes computer more than jeep

See, it could offend either way!

That being said, I know the labels were added all in fun and to have something different, Terry is just trying to change things up once in a while for us!

RE: Re: RE: midnight oil

At first glance, I liked them. But I can see how some new people that are pretty experienced MIGHT take offense. So in the spirit of these boards, I feel like the new labels should be removed or at least altered to something else that wouldn't be taken as offensive.

God, I hate how PC I sound.

I'm pretty thick-skinned, but I gotta admit, when I saw "Rollover Waiting to Happen" under my name, I was a bit irked. I've got 20+ years experience in wheeling, and I'd say I'm far from being a rollover waiting to happen. I wouldn't be too thrilled with being called a "Groupie" either, and I don't suppose anyone else would if they understood the meaning. I say get rid of the childish labels, keep the post counts and joined dates, and get back to being a Jeep forum instead of a popularity contest.

RE: Re: RE: "Status", post counts, and problems th

Another thing, while I'm at it: It doesn't matter how many posts a person has, either. On the Geocaching boards, one of the guidelines states, "Whether a person and 1 or 1000 posts, they should be treated with the same amount of respect." There are folks there that have maybe 30 or 40 posts, but when they have posted, it has always been something extremely wise, useful, and helpful to others. Same here, as with Fireman Harry. He may not have much to say, but when he speaks, you better listen, or you might miss something important and worthwhile.
