Starter

Last question for now, I promise!! Usually, the jeep starts right up. Sometimes, however, it doesn't. It turns over but doesn't catch, and then it sounds like the starter continues to spin... I don't know how to describe it any better than that, but It's aggravating and I want to fix it... Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

It sounds like something is spinning, but the engine itself doesn't move? I'd bet on starter too. It's not a hard replace (3 bolts I think), and they are pretty cheap at the local parts store.

I had a CJ for about 10 years, and I had to replace the starter 4 times on that guy.

Sounds like either your starter bindex is weak or broke or teeth might be missing on your flywheel, autozone starters are pretty good, and they have a lifetime warranty, I bought my starter from them back in 03 and the bindex broke a couple weeks ago and I took it back and they gave me a new starter for free. if it's the fly wheel you'll have to take it to a machine shop and they'll have to put a new ring gear on.

4 or 6 cylinder? On my 4 banger it's only 2 bolts, 14mm socket 15 minute swap, although the second one is kinda a butt to get to. I recommend the autozone one with the lifetime warranty. With the mud and water I go through it's rough on them and I think I'm on my 4th no questions asked. In fact I recommend the lifetime warranty on anything you get for the jeep, my 4th alternator is going on this weekend
