Sick 90 YJ with a whole laundry list of problems. Six cylinder with a two barrel and a regulated cat. Was getting 4 miles to the gallon until I found the posting be Terry of the Vacuum diagram. I could use a good guess at the initial setting for the Idle screws, one is four and a half turns and the other is 2 and a quarter turns. Doesn´t hardly seem right to me. They are hard to get right because the carb keeps wanting to regulate and the RPM´s change. I guess that´s why they put the locking caps on them. Right now I´m trying to find an open circuit in the fuel gauge wiring. I get the feeling it´s in the wiring someplace, somebody hooked up the trailer lights to the fuel gauge wire. A wiring diagram would be helpful. The next step is to finish dialing in the fuel system, then have a look at the rear end. The Jeep belongs to a buddy of mine, off hunting terriorists and I´d kinda like to get it right for him before he gets back. I´ve had some experience with XJ´s but the YJ model is kinda new to me, especially with the smog carburator.[addsig]

I´ve got it up to about eight and a half now. After fixing the vacuum leak. What kind of mileage might I look for city driving? Gas is about $4.50 a gallon over here, bouble ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How deep is that mud hole? I´m standing on my buddies shoulders and he´s standing on my Jeep.[addsig]

I set my carb mixture to 2 1/2 turns out for both barrells. someone told me that was the norm for american cars. Seemed to work for me[addsig]

just a measure for gas mileage... my 4 cyl YJ gets 14 miles to the gallon on a bad week. 18 on a good one. Course, you gotta 6 cyl., so maybe cut 2 or 3 miles off of that mark. Good luck.[addsig]

I´ll look around for a Haynes but they can be hard to find. I read German pretty well, but I feel alot more comfortable with good ol Merican. I fiddle around with alot of different kinds of 4X4 and my library isn´t what it should be. I´ve now got it up to 9 miles to the gallon plus. I´m trying to figure out what actuates the throttle solenoid, it seems to have a mind of it´s own, engauges and disengauges seemingly with no rhyme nor reason. I know some Dodges have a timer (automatic trans) and Chevys often engauge when the air conditioner is turned on and alot of manufacturers use them to keep the throttle from slamming shut when the carb vacuum gets to high. But this solenoid I havn´t got figured out yet. The fuel gauge problem seems to be a short somewhere; I havn´t nailed it down yet. I don´t really know if it´s the wiring or in the gauge. I´ll have to wait till it messes up again. The motor sometimes diesels when I shut it down. I advanced the timíng two degrees above spec., it seemed to help some. I turned the idle screws to two and a half turns and it seems to idle just fine (other than a little miss). I´ll keep at it. Next project is to figure out where all of the noise is coming from the drivetrain. Seems to be louder when I back off the gas or when going around a curve. I suspect some worn rear end parts. And also some worn transmission parts. It sounds like more than one noise down there.

Found some corrosion on the back of the fuel gauge seems to have cured that problem.

Finally settled on 2 3/4 turns on the idle mixture. Carb does seem to have a dead spot around 3000 RPM. and accelaerates slowly beyond that.

I lowered the idle a little below spec. which seems to have helped the deiseling problem.

Replaced a steering rod end (left). And a worn bolt in the track bar (front panard). It seems to want to stay in it´s own lane now.

But there does seem to be some play in the pitman shaft (left and right) and the steering shaft. Has anybody ever made this adjustment before (the big lock nut at the back of the steering box, and slightly tightening the adjuster)? I have an extra steering box, but don´t really want to change it out, if it´s just an adjustment.[addsig]
