Scout II axle swap

I'm seriously considering swapping Scout II Dana 44 axles under my 76 CJ-7. I understand they are approx. 2" wider so the spring perches will need modified. I'll more than likely do a spring over at this time anyhow.

Is there anything I should know before purchasing them other than the gear ratio?
Anyone have any experience with this swap please give me your input as to how well you like it or any problems you may have incountered.

i have not done it, but have researched it to no end.
on the rear you just have to move the spring pearches
the front is a diffrent story though. you have to ''outboard'' the spring hangers to the outside of the frame, or you will end up mounting on of the pearches on top of the pumpkin. the easyest way to get an idea of this is to go to PBB and do a search in the jeep or gen 4x4 section on outboarding the hangers.
good luck on the swap

sold.

My Jeep is sitting in the shop right now on jackstands with the front of the frame stripped bare, waiting for me to get a chance to make my brackets. I gave up on the idea of ever getting a widetrack CJ D30 to stand up, and I'm tired of spending money on them, so Thursday evening I gave in and decided to sling the D44 under the front. I had to work Friday, my wife graduated Saturday, and yesterday was mother's day.....so I'm waiting for some spare time, probably be next weekend now!

Thanks for the compliments!

The Scout D44 has o* caster which is important to consider when swapping into another vehicle. In a SOA CJ with 0* caster the pinion will be pointed too far down to be practical. Trying to tilt the pinion up will give positive caster and you won't be able to keep the jeep on the road or trail.

Best fix is to cut the knuckles from the axletubes and have them rotated to get negative caster and an acceptable pinion angle. A buddy of mine had a shop do it for $300.

Re: Noise while 4X4ing

I'm loosing intrest in this swap very quickly after doing more research. Seems like more work than it's worth. I think I'll clamshell & truss my AMC 20 for now & upgrade the axles when they let go.
